Question about buying a car out of state

I am looking at a few different cars to buy currently. All of them are out of the state I live in, Connecticut. I am looking at buying from a dealership, and I am wondering if I would have to pay taxes on the car in both the state I purchase, as well as in my state when I go to register. In Connecticut, I know you have to pay sales tax on a car when you register, at least with a private sale. Anyone know how this would work?

you should only have to pay the tax when you register the vehicle in your state

Get a 7 day temp tag to drive the car home to Connecticut. Them when you register, pay the tax. Feel free to pay the tax money to me, and I will take care of all of it for you.

I know they used to base it on the year of the car here, as to whether they go with blue book value. It used to be cutoff of, say, 1995 or newer would go with the blue book value. Before that, it would go off the amount entered on the bill of sale.

Sales tax is paid to the state you register the car in. So if you bought it out of state, you have to go home and pay the sales tax.

If you happen to buy it in MA, be aware, temp tags don't exist here.

And just so you know, the male niblonian's name is "Ken"

You pay tax based on your address zipcode, it doesn't matter where you buy it; tax is automatically calculated on your state if you are dealing with dealerships.

You pay tax on the amount entered on the pink slip that seller fills out on private sales.

I just bought my car in boston from a dealer. went up with a trailer paid for the car and towed it back. got my temp tags and had to pay the ct state tax for the purchase (no mass taxes). then had to take it through emissions cause it was from out of state and then got my perm. plates.

towed it back on trailer so i wouldnt have to go buy the car and then drive the 2 1/2 hours back to register then drive back to boston to bring it home.

CT makes it extra difficult to buy a car out of state.

Sounds more like Massholia makes it extra difficult by not giving out temp plates.

you could have a buddy put it on the back of a car hauler trailer and haul it home.
my buddy bought a silverado in Michigan. it was gonna be his "back up truck" he took his main truck with a car hauler trailer put the pickup he got in Michigan on it.
hauled it home. he had to bring the truck on the trailer to the BMV. they had to "inspect it" (make sure turn signals and that shit works) after that checked out got his tags and he could drive it legally.

thats what i did, but CT just wants emissions for an out of state car less than 15 or 20 years old.

Did you have your emissions done before you went to the DMV? The garage I bring my truck to does emission testing and I am wondering if I can bring it there before I go to the DMV. The DMV is quite possibly the worst place on earth.

No doubt about that, but to have to pass the emission test before registering is kind of a pain on the CT side. Although, I think that might just be on a used car that's over 3 years old, I don't think you have to do the emissions test on new car.

I'm a MA resident and if I bought a car in NH, if I was going to register it in MA, they wouldn't give me a temp tag either. I'd still have to go back home to get the registration work done before I could pick up the car, but I wouldn't have to flat bed it down to pass an emissions test before I could register it.

This is why I'd have to get a really good deal (thousands not hundreds) to buy a car out of state. It's just not worth the hassle.

Oh yeah, it's "taxachusetts" when referring to the state and "Masshole" when referring to the people.
