Question about Brakes
Question about Brakes
Hey all,
A couple questions if anyone can spare a minute:
I drive a 2005 Accord sedan with 70k on the odometer.
1. I realize that brake pad/rotor life varies greatly depending on the amount of miles and type of miles that one puts on the car, but what would you say is the general acceptable range of mileage between replacing the front and rear brake pads and rotors? What is the average?
2. Is this a good price quote for the brake work described below:
Front pads: 79.98
Rotor: 45.54 (x2)
Labor: 77.95
ttl: 249.01
Rear rotors: 40.38 (x2)
Labor: 88.95
ttl: 169.71
The above prices are for generic pads and rotors. I'm told it will be more for the honda specified parts.
Thanks for any feedback.

I went a different route. I bought cross drilled and slotted rotors online. Then I bought raybestes ceramic pads FR and RR. I spent 44.00 for both front pads and 38.00 for the rear pads. My honda mechanic friend charged me 100 bucks to install everything.
hveagle - has this car ever had a brake job before or is this its second go-around? If its on its original brakes, 70K is entirely reasonable mileage for a brake job....or even a second one.
The pads seem overpriced. The rotors sound about right and so does the mileage. I'm at 75k on my TL and have replaced pads and rotors up front, but only had the rear rotors turned. Kinda curious why the labor is more for the rear too. Maybe try another shop or find out how much the parts are from a honda dealer. You may save more money buying NAPA gold rotors and some decent ceramic or carbon/cermanic blend pads. I have hunch they'll cost less or the same for a better part than what most shops will get you (cheap products with a markup).
Also ask the shop to measure the thickness of the front rotors, you may only need them turned, but better safe than sorry too for that matter.

The pad price is out of line. Higher performance pads cost less than that. The rotor price seems OK. And if you worry the least bit about your brakes, have this mechanic change the rotors AND your fluid. This shouldn't cost much, and does wonders for pedal feel.

The prices are very reasonable.
The prices for the pads are high, but the high mark-up on the pads is what's compensating for the low labor cost.
70k is pretty reasonable for brake life. I've seen/done brake jobs on many cars, especially the rear pads, before 25,000 miles.

hey guys, thanks for the responses.
Actually, this is my third brake job. This last interval has been right around 23k... I think that I will shop around a little bit -- but the general impression that I get is that the quoted prices are a bit high but not unreasonable?
