Quattroporte, XJR, M45
My dad called me the other day and asked for my input on which car he should consider buying next. He currently has the 2003 Q45 and hates it. He is looking at either a Maserati Quattroporte, M45, or the XJR. He had a 1999 XJR and loved it, although he doesnt like the new body style as much. I know this group of 3 represent a wide range of cars but he doesnt like BMW, Audi or Mercedes. Im curious as to what everyone else thinks about the selection. Thanks for you input, both POSITIVE and NEGATIVE.

Um. Duh. Maserati.
Mind you, I don't even know why the M45 is in that group since it's quite alot cheaper and pretty much in a different segment as the other two.

yes it does and i also find it hard to justify spending that much on a car (dont get me wrong i have plenty of expensive dream cars) but he worked for the money, not me.

That Maserati is really nice. Has he looked at/driven any of them yet? If he would be happy in any of the cars you said,........the M is MUCH cheaper.
What about the GS or LS (i think is the top one) from Lexus? Does he not like Lexus?
That Maserati is SWEET.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but to me, the Maserati seems...well...very, very Italian...and I don't mean that in the best of ways. It's kind of like a fine Italian silk shirt. Yes, it is of the up-most quality, and it is the latest and greatest of designs, and it is sure to grab the attention of many, but it's just so flamboyant and flashy about it. It has a slightly tacky/sleezy vibe going for it, in that the design is overwrought, and the interior is just covered in buckets and buckets of the finest materials, without any purpose or precision like the Germans (or Japanese). In otherwords, this car is hot, decadent, and powerful, but not in the most tasteful way.
Of the options listed, I say go for the XJR (or maybe the Super V8).
Although to add to the list, how about a Lexus GS450h? Or maybe wait for the new LS to come out?
I know you said he's not fond of Audi, but the A8 is an absolutely incredible vehicle. The Volkswagen Phaeton is absoultely incredible as well, and he'd be able to steal a W12. I think it would be wise to go drive the Audi, BMW, and Mercedes just to get a feel for what else the segment has to offer (if he hasn't experienced their products as of late).

he went to drive the quattroporte...didnt have any complaints about it. he doesnt like his q45 because there is a half second hesitation between when you floor the car and when it begins to move so he isnt sure if he want to get another infiniti. my vote is also for the quattroporte although i loved the jag when he had it. my only reservation about the maserati is its reliability. i know road and track drove it 3k all at once across the country and didnt have any problems. he drives 25k a year. the jag oddly enough didnt have one problem during the 124k he owned it. same with the infiniti (only 63k on it now) so the only thing that would really come into play is the long term capabilities of the car.

Between those three....I'd DEFINITELY go for the Maserati!!! It is an unbelievable car with awesome exhaust note!! If money is not a problem, tell your dad....go buy the fucking Maserati or else!!!..lol. I really love how you can customize the color of the interior top to bottom.

He drives 25K a year... forget the Maser! Do some research on maintaining it, just like an F-car (for a good reason) it ain't cheap. The Maser like an F-car is a second, third or fourth car not a 25k commuter.
Also when one drives an Italian 6 figure car and "has no complaints" you haven't found your "fit" yet. When you hit 100K a car should make you weak in the knees or you should keep shopping.
Putting my spin on it, I would get the M and a used 996 C2 for the weekends, you could own and drive both for less than the cost to own and drive the "4 Door" which sounds ever-so-much-more sexy in Italian!

Outnumbered at home
Saw one of those maserati's the other day on the road. Just blows the other 2 out of the water on looks and attention grabbing.
Odd choice in cars to be choosing from though

I love the Maserati but wouldn't buy one with the current paddle shifter setup, just not that great of a system. Apparantly for 2007, Maserati is bringing in a 7spd auto for the Quattroporte.
The 06 XJR has 400hp and comes standard with a really nice looking Sabre 19in wheel (replaces those fugly 04-05 wheels) and a bunch of other improvements for the year.....bigger brakes, better sound proofing glass, etc. Take one for a spin, its a really hot car to drive. If you want a bigger car, the Super V8 is very nice as well.
As stated, the M45 is simply not in the above category.

All three have good and bad, but phipark is right, the Quattroporte is just in a totally different league.
So he's looking at super sedans, huh? How bout checking out the Audi A8 W12, or the Benz S55, the Bimmer 760, and although it's a little more than 100k, the flying spur

I would go with the Quattroporte if money wasnt an object at all due to the high price and upkeep of the vehicle. However the XJR is an outstanding car and should also be considered

That aside, the Portfolio really isn't worth the money as it MSRPs for $116k (Quattroporte territory) vs. $92k for the standard Super V8.
There really isn't much different about the Portfolio (Side vents, wheels, bigger exhaust tips, interior).
All 06 SC'd Jags get the 400hp rating.

Maserati. Of all things to see on the road in NJ, I've seen 3 already. interior is gorgeous, I don't like the center console, though. And the beige interior isn't very good looking.
And what's that tab on the door for?

Probably a sun screen, you pull it up and clip it to the top of the window frame. Most of the $80K + sedans have them
