Possible Big Nissan Engine Problem??!
Possible Big Nissan Engine Problem??!
I hate to get info from 2nd and 3rd party sources, but the people that supplied this information to me are credible and IMO, wouldn't make shit up for the hell of it like our good friend 1killercls.
Anyways, my friend is a friend w/a nissan service technician at an east coast nissan dealership. The nissan technician tells my friend that the 2.5L 4cyl engine in the nissan altima are being replaced w/ new engines under warranty at an alarming rate.
The service technician explains that the front catalytic convertor in the 2.5L altima cracks and results in small broken pieces. Subsequently, these pieces/debris get sucked into the engine, which results in the engine blowing. The technician tells my friend that there is presently no solution to this problem and all nissan is doing is replacing that the blown engine w/a new one; which doesn't mean the issue may not occur again down the line. Furthermore, the technician states that the dealership just ordered over 53+ new replacement engines for the cars w/this unfortunate problem.
Thats all i could get out of my friend. I was curious if any of you guys have heard of any such issues since I see no reason why the nissan technician would lie to my friend about this? Or is this just BS?
p.s. lets not make this a pissing contest, lets just see if there is any truth in this situation or if the matter can be put to rest

I was also curious as to how a front cat could break and send the resulting pieces up the engine. oh well, i hope it was BS for nissan's sake, but my friend wouldn't have any reason to lie esp. since he currently owns two nissans he bought new
Actually I have heard of this problem before, not specifically about Nissan engines. It can be more likely to occur in manual transmission cars while downshifting rapidly with a closed throttle. This can cause severe back pressure sufficient to suck the exhaust back into the engine, taking any gunk that might be lying there with it. Yes, if the guts of the converter are cracked then they will also make a return trip. There have been similar cases in older Taurus SHOs with manual trannies that had bad cats. This problem is exacerbated by current trends that place the first cat close to the exhaust port so that it runs hotter and more efficiently.
