Your definition of POP is different than his definition of POP. You are referring to a special mode and he is probably talking about "instant-on". In any case, your V1 should have went off with regular K or Ka band radar if he was using "instant-on" and if you have the latest V1 software, you would have defense against POP mode radar.

But you are both right and wrong. There are no laws against POP radar, it is not illegal. Speeding is illegal. Since you don't have any say in traffic control measure or police procedures, you can't have a problem with that so your answer should have been No. Problem is POP may not be accurate, certified, and may not give the best results so it may be unfair to motorists. So was it unfair; were you not going 79mph?

Regardless, shall the police use POP radar to clock cars? They shouldn't. If you go to court or even talk to the DA about this, will you win...mostly like YES. Because the police failed to use the approved methods to give you a citation on. He can use POP mode but he is supposed to verify and support it with a true radar reading. Maybe police procedure says go ahead an POP and issue tickets on POP until we get challenged? I doubt it tho.

Why would a more advanced form of radar be illegal for a trooper to use? Trooper's typically don't make rookie mistakes.

Unfortunately there is nothing more advanced about POP radar. It is simply a way for police radar to defeat drivers with radar detectors by cloacking their position until they are ready to actually clock you. It's like using an infrared light at night (which people can't see with their eyes) until you are ready to turn on the flashlight (visible light) which will give your position away.

AFAIK POP radar readings and data are inadmissible in court. Even the inventor will warn LEO not to use it as such.

From what I know, you are just screwed with laser. By nature it can "POP" all the time. It samples incedibly fast, and doesn't need to track you for a bit like rader does in order to get an accurate reading.

Thanks This place rocks, I really hate it when I don't have much time to poke around. Unfortunately (for me at least, $$ wise), I have had much more free time lately, so I've had the chance to hang around more.

Unfortunately as said ^^^ I think you might be screwed on the laser thing. My V1 goes off all the time with laser around here in Kansas and we don't have front license plate either (which is not a requirement to use traffic laser). Your best bet is to note the range at which he tagged you (which should be noted on the ticket) and if it's too far (out of spec) you stand a better chance.

Yesterday I saw a pair of motorcycle cops running laser and here in flat Kansas, I could see them ahead almost half-mile away but they had to wait for me to come within range, by that time I was going the speed limit. And they waited until I was really close and when they pulled the trigger, V1 responded immediately. I guess they depend on people just simply not seeing them parked.

Good luck.

Were you the lone frontrunner on the interstate? He probably "insta-fired" laser straight on you.

And where is Snappyville? That up north?

Since it was laser your screwed. POP is not in this picture since Laser was used & not radar.
The only ways your can defeat laser is by getting lucky & picking up a laser aleart from someone in front of you & slowing down in time, or seeing the cop before he tags you. You will not get range waring from any radar detector like a radar signal. You got no warning cause he lit the gun, tagged you, & shut it off in 1-2 seconds. V1 just didn't have time to react. Laser is a really thin beam you have to be on top of it to get a warning.

You could always go to court and argue. Most state troopers are well equiped and don't make a mistake. However, there are some who's over confident and think you might just pay for the ticket and not go for a trial. If he "pop" you, it's NOT illegal, but if you argue the case, you might win. Worst comes to worse, it's a 3 point ticket I believe...

best of luck
