From Edmunds...
LAS VEGAS — General Motors has detailed this year's slate of 28 SEMA show vehicles, which include a Pontiac Solstice SD-290 concept designed to be a throwback to vintage racing cars, a tuned 2008 Saturn Astra with chassis modifications, and the Anniversary 427 crate engine based on the iconic ZL-1 engine.
The Detroit automaker also says it will make "a couple of sport compact production announcements" on October 29.
Unlike Ford, which hasn't been shy about posting images of most of its upcoming SEMA lineup, General Motors is taking a more conservative approach. As of early Tuesday, only one image of the Solstice concept appeared on the GM corporate Web site. Of paramount interest to the U.S. tuning community is what the Detroit automaker has in mind for its 2008 Astra. GM would only say that "Saturn shows off a tuner-inspired example [of the Astra] that uses subtle exterior and chassis mods, as well as unique wheels, to give the car a streetwise stance."
GM said it will highlight "performance with an environmental twist" at the automotive aftermarket exhibit, with the overall theme being "green goes with mean." The showstoppers in this category will include a 600-horsepower Corvette Z06 owned by Jay Leno. The Tonight Show host's Corvette is powered by E85 and is equipped with a custom 500-cubic-inch engine. Another green machine is the FlexFuel Chevy Hot Rod built by GM Performance Division and patterned after the hot rods that populated drag strips in the late 1940s and '50s. It is equipped with a 500-hp FlexFuel version of the turbocharged Ecotec engine.
Other GM SEMA highlights include a Pontiac G8 GT built by rapper 50 Cent and Unique Autosports, a "slightly enhanced version" of the Pontiac G8 GT production model, and factory-customized Cadillac CTS Sport and Escalade Sport concepts. The 50 Cent G8 GT is a red-and-black model with a GM Performance Parts LSX 427 engine, custom paint, 22-inch chrome wheels and a custom interior with an 800-watt audio system.
Truck aficionados aren't forgotten in GM's SEMA mix. On display will be a Chevrolet Silverado HD Crew Cab Z71 "Big Red" concept that is a spinoff of last year's Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Big Red concept and a Chevrolet Silverado HD Country Music concept with a fold-out portable stage.
What this means to you: As you might expect, the domestic automakers are coming to SEMA with guns ablaze.

Some of you know seem to know nothing about racing history and or the style of race car they went after. They hit the nail on the head.
I love it; it's suppose to be a vintage race car. It pulls it off well! Even keeps some futuristics views.
It's not suppose to be street car guys
come on...
Back in the day they use to race with single seat closed tops like that. Most of them used leather to close it off. But some had hard-top covers like this one.
Guess I shouldn't be surprised on the :ghey: comments since the age demographics on the responses are all from early 20 somethings.
And no one commented on the 427 engine they crammed in there!!?!? LOL The car must be insane to drive.

I never in my right mind thought I would like a Solstice but this one is incredibly cool. I'm really digging on the wheels. It took me a minute to figure out what they were trying for when looking at it, but then it set in. As Siggy mentioned...it must be an absolute blast to drive!
Retro is definitely making a comeback... It'll be interesting to see if they can find a market substantial enough to produce

Press release...
Designed to evoke the emotions of classic sports cars, the Pontiac Solstice SD-290 race concept captures the purposeful design of vintage racecars. The design is dramatic, featuring a passenger cockpit tonneau cover and a driver windscreen, creating a pure racecar that looks ready to take the checkered flag even while sitting on the starting grid.
Aerodynamics have been improved and the SD-290’s weight reduced with the removal of the windshield, side glass, window regulator, convertible top, climate system and windshield wiper system. Complementing the design are new side fender gill panels, a new hood with heat extracting grilles and a competition red paint scheme.
Backing up the race-ready appearance is the available Club Sport Z0K suspension package and an all-business cockpit filled with auxiliary gauges, a roll bar and racing seat.
Vehicle highlights:
Pontiac Solstice SD-290 race concept
2.0L Ecotec direct-injected and turbocharged generating 290 horsepower
Five-speed manual transmission
Weight reduction through installation of driver-side only windscreen and elimination of door glass/hardware, convertible top/hardware, HVAC system and wiper system
Solo Performance cat-back exhaust system with center-mounted outlet
KW Automotive coil-over suspension package
Three-piston aluminum calipers with 13-inch rotors from Stainless Steel Brake Company
Forged 19-inch wheels with Hoosier R6 racing tires
New front fascia, grille inserts, hood and front fenders, leading to better aerodynamics
Passenger-side hard tonneau cover
Competition red exterior color
Rear spoiler
Tinted headlamp lenses
Removable racing-style steering wheel
Racing seat with four-point safety harness
Chrome fire extinguisher
Pegasus center console gauge package
Driver’s roll bar
