Germany mulls autobahn speed limit

Oct. 30 - German politicians propose introducing a speed limit of 130 km/h on the stretches of motorway where there is none.

The SPD, one of the parties in the ruling coalition government says a speed cap would help to cut carbon dioxide output. But Chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected the idea and Germany's influential car industry says imposing a standard speed limit on the German autobahn would have scant impact on the environment and only hurt domestic carmakers.

I was there in 1975 and there were sections that had limits even then!

there's no reason for anyone to ever have to drive over 90 kph (55mph). It's just not necessary.

Yeah at least 55% of the autobahn has speed limits or so the history channel says ;D

That group is getting more powerful so it may work out for them eventually. It still beats our speedlimit of 65 with their proposed 80mph limit.

It does seem as though the proponents for Autobahn speed limits represent a growing hegemony, as the "global warming" argument has been added to their toolbox.

Despite the global warming and safety arguments, this may have more to do with class warfare (and egalitarian delusions) where faster cars do tend to cost more than slower cars. Likely, this is another attempt to put the rich in their place.

I am so sick of hearing about CO2 and global warming. Its a crock people, pure and simple. The next person that tries to lecture me on global warming is going to get a swift fist to the face for their trouble.....
