Pontiac Solstice
I was stuck on 495 yesterday and next to me along most of the way was one of those trucks that carry cars to dealers - it was loaded with nothing but Solstices.
The rear looks odd in person with just one exhaust on one side. Also, I noticed the reflectors in the bumpers look like the ones on a GMC truck that was in front of me (recessed circles, half red, half white). The side mirrors look cheap. The rotors look a little small, but let's face it, it's not a performance car (save the GTP), so they're probably fine. The rear looks nicer in person than in pics, but the front is still fugly.
That said, I wouldn't buy one - BUT - the Saturn Sky looks a heck of a lot better front and back. I like the interiors of the Sky better, as well.

I love that thing, esp. now that they are putting in a 260HP turbo 6

i saw one on the road a few weeks ago, it's alright, but i like the Miata/Mx-5 and the S2000 a lot more.
i don't know if and when american cars will ever reclaim their spot that the japanese automakers took away in the early to mid 80s of being more dominant in sales and car designs.

I dunno. I like the Sky's styling better, but I'd have to drive either before I made an educated decision on them. I like the concept of an inexpensive roadster, but the engine seems a little anemic on paper. I am not really a fan of the Solstice's styling, particularly the GM style reflectors in the rear.

Styling wise I do like it, the rear is better than the front, I do like the Sky better in pictures but would need to see it to be sure.
On paper it looks fine for a cruiser, which is the role it will probably occupy in most garages. The GXP will fix the power issues but will the chassis be able to balance it out?
Bottom line if I wanted a cruiser I would wait and compare it to the Sky but likely go with the Sky on looks. For a performance car I would wait for the GXP and see if the power (and possible suspension upgrades) make it more compelling than the MX5. In any event if it meet my expectations behind the wheel then I would not hesitate to buy the car as long as the dealer didn't want more than MSRP.

Based on the Sky forums the "market adjustments" can be from 2-5K. It seems the average Sky buyer on the dealers list hasn't been involved in buying high demand cars. There is story after story of people being on the "list" for months to find out their deal isn't MSRP. Moral of the story is if you place yourself on the list for a future potentially hot car have something signed that the deal is MSRP/destination plus TTL.

GM marketing
Side comment: I think GM needs to be less cheap in their marketing if they're going to win over people's heart. Several times I've requested for GM brochures but never did they send me what I wanted. For the Corvette, the first time requested I got a full-line brochure instead. The next time I tried I finally got a Corvette-exclusive "brochure" -- a 1-page brochure, that is. They also never sent me the Sky brochure I requested.
It's one thing to have a good impression and start to like a car, but for that "like" to turn into a purchase, at least for me it does take a full-size, full-color glossy brochure that I can sleep on and dream about.

Sorry for the sidetrack. To answer the question in this thread, I don't really like the Solstice even though the thought of getting a Sky has crossed my mind. The reasons are similar to what other people have pointed out, that the Solstice just doesn't look as good on the outside and the inside has poor material quality.
Even for the Sky, for the reasons I have mentioned, I will not seriously consider it until GM sends me the darn brochure and finally acknowledges that I am a potential customer.

They have always been stingy with Corvette brochures, there are a lot of people that collect them. They may be the same way with the Solstice since it is so hot and they are selling so well right now.

I've seen a quite a few around here. Definitely provides some Miata competition, and it will be interesting to see what the Solstice's reliability is like.

dumb ass.
