Garmin 250w or 255w. Has both maps of U.S and Canada (plus Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, etc). The 255w is a slightly (very slightly) updated version of the 250w; the only difference as far as I know is that the 255w moves the cursor smoother.
newegg has sales on garmin units quite often. we picked up a garmin 260w for my father-in-law back in may and so far, as far as I know, it's been good.
My dad has had a garmin for the last 2-3 years and hasn't had any complaints about it.

Can you imagine if you went to use someone's computer and the keyboard was laid out like that? It was taking me too long just to enter a word. TomTom's re-routing is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better too. When directions are routed, you can go and look at the directions turn by turn, and for any reason, if you want to avoid a certain street or freeway, you simply tap on it, then it re-routes... where as Garmin's (well, at least with the 680), you don't get to choose, there's a "re-route" feature... when pressed, it simply re-routes the directions whatever it wants, and suppose you were trying to avoid a certain area or street... it may or may not be in the directions... again you don't get to choose.
I just wonder if the people that give the
the TomTom 930/730 also have the "lane suggestion" feature... tells you what lane(s) to be in, in preparation for an up coming off/on ramp, exit etc etc...

good thing at least one person can back me up... cause I can honestly say.... I've own both, and I don't know why people rave about the Garmins... I had the 680 and right off the bat the stupid-ass keyboard not laid out like.... well... like a keyboard... it goes ABCDEFG etc. etc. across

believe or not I have neither... currently, I have the Sony GPS... but it's about to be returned back to Costco... while it does offer some really cool features, it's also lacking some, AND it's rather slow in routing. Also slow in picking up GPS signal when I turn it on. Too bad though cause it's got a nice 4.8" screen. but after I return it, I plan on buying the TomTom 730 (it's a step down from the 930).
The only thing I don't like about Dan's TomTom (vs. his much older Garmin) is that you have to enter the city before entering the address. The Garmin asks you the other way around - address, and then lists all possible matches, if the address exists in more than one city. I liked that for cases when you weren't positive exactly which area your address was classified (technically). I don't know if there's a way to skip the City query screen on the TomTom, but if you aren't sure, you can't actually move on to enter the address anyway, and have it make suggestions. Or can you?
I just got a Garmin 200 at Target for $140.00. I wanted something inexpensive for business travel and it works great. If you just want a small navi that works give it a try, plus it has a bunch of searches and cool features for a basic model.

What I like about TT is you can modified and customize lots of things. Capable of watching dvd movies, mp3 music, view pics, extra storage via memory card, change color of the map, enter-edit poi, custom map voice, custom on/off screen, possible hack to get map that you didn't purchase, free traffic report (with antennae), speed limit alert, over speed alert are few things that I choose TT over other car navigation. I must admit, TT is not user friendly as Garmin, but it's cool to use and customize it just like our car.

i will definitely look. thanks man.
yeah, but like I said... how many Garmin fanboys have actually tried the TomTom?
another thing I didn't cared for about the Garmin 680 was that there was always a delay... so for example... if I was crossing an intersection, and I looked down at the screen (literally, while I'm in the middle of the intersection), the Garmin would show that I was just about to cross... not a big deal? I would think this could cause problems if I thought the turn was coming but I was actually passing it... The one month that I had it, it just bothered the hell outta me... (that, and the stupid-ass keyboard thing)
oh yeah, and the Garmin 680 totally lack poi (points of interest) icons on the screen

^^
Just to clarify, the free updates are based on other users' input. There is a feature where, as a user if you see something missing or wrong on a map, you can fix the problem and share it with other users. At least, that's the way it worked with my TomTom ONE. There was a latest map guarranty where you could download the latest maps for free within 30 days of purchase if a later map was issued. I bought mine on Black Friday last year. There is now a later version of the US map but I have to buy it to use it.

Did you know you can hack it (might depend on what models) to get map that you don't have to buy? Not that I recommend it nor ever try it, but it's possible.

btw, for those with TT, here is the one of the best discussion forum: http://tomtomforums.com/
