We stayed in Dubai when my wife and I went to the F1 GP in Bahrain last year, ever since then she has been on me to buy a place on the Palm Islands, though a cool place my wife is nuts.

I dunno, then again no one seems to be able to accurately determine the amount of petro in the ground, plus I think the big issue is recovery costs, you would have one figure for how much oil at current recovery costs and a significantly different one if you figure the reserves with recovery costs at 10times current levels. All I know is when we got the Palm Island "sales pitch" she said 15 years and everything I had seen indicated 20 years or less of reserves. It certainly is an amazing place and would indeed be a world class resort area if it weren't for the tension in the area. The again I went without issues BUT I have been dozens of places the State Department said I shouldn't go!

They have other stuff too like gas deposits. They are just planning on running out of oil which is a smart move on their part. Perhaps the estimates of 100 years is based on today's consumption which will increase over the next 100 years dramatically with China, possibly making estimates very incorrect.
They're building the largest mall in the world, the tallest building, they have probably the most expensive hotel, the two manmade island projects, one of the best airports in the world, and one of the largest shipping ports in the world. It's nice when your country is so small that you can dramatically improve it all at once. Can't do that here in the US with how large we are, our systems are so antiquated compared to the rest of the world.

Two sites on the Palm Islands are:
www.palmsales.ca
http://realestate.theemiratesnetwork...lm_islands.php
The second probably gives a better overview.
The UAE is definately an forward thinking place (economically), will be interesting to see how the plan works given the nature of the region.
