Smile P0505 Check Engine

Autozone printed out that the Explanation for this code, is that the ECM has detected that the IAC counts are higher or lower than expected. The engine speed is not in it's expected range. Could be due to 1. Vacuum leak on engine, 2. Dirty throttle body, 3. IAC motor defective, 4. poor electrical connection to the IAC valve. This is on a 1996 Acura integra, with 200,000+ miles, with a new distributer added two weeks ago. Autozone can provide the IAC motor if i pay for it , but I don't know if as a DIY what the next steps i can do on my own vs finding the mechanic who can tell me what to look for and where it is located. Any advice from those with experience with type of code and side effects if I do nothing at all? Your hints are really appreciated, and I don't mind getting under or around the engine to find the culprit myself if visable or testable with minimum household tools , and ohm meter etc.

You can always start by try to clean the throttle body by yourself. That may fix the problem with a minimal cost (under $10). If you want I can tell you how to do it from memory, it is fairly easy. I just did it on my friends 94 LS about three weeks ago.

Tools/Material Needed:

-old tooth brush
-10mm wrench or medium sized flat head or phillips head screw driver (I haven't seen an Integra with a stock intake for a while, so I do not remember which one it is)
-A can of Valvoline Syn Power - Carb, Choke & Throttle Body Cleaner, which is available at Advance Auto Parts
-two rags (one clean)

While the car is OFF:

-Remove intake ducting from the throttle body (circled in red). Should be fairly easy to wiggle off after you loosen up a bolt/screw or two on the ducting attatched to the throttle body.

-Place a rag under the throttle body to catch excess run-off from the cleaner.

-Once the throttle body is exposed, open the throttle body plate wide open: either by having someone mash the gas in the car (remember car off!) or by pushing down (counter clock wise) the attatchement that the throttle cable is connected to (what the green arrow is pointing to.)

-While the throttle body plate is wide open spray the cleaner according to the directions and use the old tooth brush to scrub off carbon depoits from the both the throttle body and the plate itself. Using the clean rag will help remove some of the dirt you have disturbed. WATCH YOUR FINGERS WHILE DOING THIS!

-Keep cleaning thoroughly until carbon deposits have been removed.

-Reattatch air intake ducting to the throttle body and tighten the bolts/screw you had loosened.

Now for the fun part: start the car and immediately give it some gas (half throttle, maybe more), it will hesitate to start up and may take a couple of times to get the car to stay on by itself. One the car is up and running, take it for 5 minute or spirited drive.

Good Luck!

Cleaning the throttle linkage

The Cleaning went well, with your directions which I am very gratefull for. I now know it is cleaner , even if it did not reset the check engine light. My next step to be determined, if I do anything at all! Thanks for you inputs!!

did you buy this car used? or just get it?
cause the code says something about bad vacuum.
check to make sure your vacuum lines are
#1. connected to the right connections
#2. they aren't holey or worn out.
if either one happens either replace line or adjust to correct connection.
sorry if this doesn't help just a guess man.
but good luck

I just returned from vacation so this reply is weeks old. I found that after the throttle was cleaned as we discussed, I had also added the techron fuel injector cleaning fluid 12 oz to the gas tank. The results took a few days for the effects of the cleaning to take place but within one fuel tank more of gas, and the check engine light was off, and has stayed off! Everyone's advice together was perfect, to resolve this problem. I can't thank you all as much as I wish I could. You guys are the Pro's!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
