P0420 Cat CEL
P0420 Cat CEL
I am getting P0420 on my 2006 Toyota Camry 2.4L. this car used to snif gas with over 400 miles, but now it's only giving me 300 miles per tank and burning gas like crazy. I tried seafoam but CEL is still on. Any idea if P0420 eventse your milage and if seafoam would help getting my milage back? If not then what about using extension and if they work in increasing your milage?
Looks to be $40-50 for each O2 sensor.
Cat appears to be integral with the exhaust manifold & around $200.
Were it me, I'd try to narrow down which O2 sensor it may be & replace that first, my guess would be downstream.
Prices above from rockauto, probably similar at your local NAPA/Autozone/etc.

I got that same code on my Honda CR-V when it was about 10 years old.
That code refers to the Catalyst System Efficiency which is why you have an O2 sensor before and after the converter so that the system can determine if the catalytic converter is doing what it should do. But in my case after driving along and deleting that code countless times, I was left stranded. It would run but at reduced RPM (about 400 RPM); step on the gas and it would quit.
I noticed no pulsations coming from the tailpipe while it was barely running, therefore something was clogged; sure enough the catalytic converter. When I removed the catalytic converter for replacement, a slew of what looked like sand came out of it. Car started right up with it removed as a test. Sounded like a NASCAR.
