Overtaking someone

I have a question, when u are on a two lane street with a dotted yellow line do u overtake people? Reason I ask is every time I am on one and I overtake let's say 3 people over a 50 mile stretch at least one either flashes their high beams or speeds up when I am next to them. It makes no sense because the speed limit is 60 and they are going 45 to 50. Does this happen to u a lot? It bugs the hell out of me and makes no sense. Maybe its an FL thing.

I do pass people on roads like that, and yes sometimes people do flash or speed up. It isn't only Florida, people are assholes everywhere in the US.

yup, when there was a tractor in front of me once i overtook him in a rural 2 lane highway. i had to be careful though.

another time i overtook a guy who was going 20 mph in a 2 lane local way and the speed limit was 45 mph.

Yes, I pass slower traffic this way. I really haven't had too many people flash their brights at me in retaliation. Maybe California drivers are nicer?

english please

i overtake people when they are slow also. the key is to get a real good jump on them so they cannot "block" you.
it catches them off guard and by the time they floor their accelerator it is too late usually.

I'm a 2 finger typer and I take my time. Plus you found the time to capitalize all the first letters of your words.

Yes, if they are going under the limit and it is safe. People are just being assholes because they think that you are an asshole for passing them, since they obviously don't know they are under the speed limit (cell phone usage most likely culprit)

Broken line... pass when safe 1-2 cars at a time if possible...

Ignore the rearview mirror unless its a truck/tractor... Usually Trucks hauling will flash their lights to let you know that you are far enough in front of them or its safe to return to the lane in front of them... You can also flash your lights to let a truck know that its safe to merge in front of you, if you are letting them pass... This helps them a lot since they are usually very long and its hard to determine how far ahead of you they really are... They usually blink their hazards twice to say thank you... you can do the same when passing...

Yeah, I get flashed alot too... People are just assholes...

Some times it's because I cut in front too closely to them, sometimes they flash 'cause they mistook my HID's for high beams (payback??), but mostly they flash 'cause they are embarrassed at how slow they are going and they are pissed that I just reminded them of that fact

The speeding up shit happens to me mostly when I'm trying to pass some one who's doing 60 in the passing lane on the highway... fuckers...

when i was 16, i used to purposely go slow so people would try to pass me and then i would gun it so they couldn't. stupid kids.

i think some peole get offended when passed, hence the speed up.
i remember in Driver's Ed, they said to flash before you pass and then they flash u when you are clear.

I drive on a two lane highway every weekend on my way to the family summer home. I usually pass a couple of people that are hovering at or below the speed limit. I remember passing some old hick in a busted pickup truck that gave me the finger and held it out there. He was going 45 in a 55 mph zone. I found it quite funny that someone would get mad at a legal procedure.

X 2.

Broken line = legal to pass when safe.

I don't think I've ever had anyone flash me when I pass, except truckers who flash to let me know I've cleared and can move in front of them.

they're just being a-holes... what I hate tho, is when I do something like that... I pass everyone, a couple either flash me or finger or whatever... then shortly after, we get to a light and then I feel stupid...

When I was younger, I used to go snowboarding at least once/twice a week... and I'd always be driving pretty fast in the twisties on the way to the resort... I'd pass everyone... yes, I'd get dirty looks... but worst part was (and this happened several times), somehow... they'd ended pulling up either next to me or across from me at the resort's parking lot, and there's that ackwardness while everyone's putting their gear on...

anyway, but for most part to answer JJ's question, you did nothing wrong, they're just be pricks

Hmm that flash before you pass shit sounds dumb to me. I put on my indicator, wait a few seconds, then overtake someone. I assumed if I flashed someone I would be saying they were too slow and needed to speed up which might make them upset. So instead I pass.

To IS, when I was in high school and had my 240sx which I could drop gears and take off quickly I would pass up to 5 slow cars at a time. They would get pissed. I once did it to another young guy so he sped up and over took me. Then I did it back to him. The last time he did it I took off and we were basically racing but I let him in cause I didnt want him to crash. He was a good sport about it you could see them smiling and laughing.

That's one of the few times it's open season on bikes. Drive/ride like a dumbass and get treated like one.

As far as passing, as long as you continue to go faster than the car you are passing, go for it. And don't bother trying to pass when there is a line of cars with no end in sight.

One of the scariest things was in Jamaica where cars would pass two at a time - side by side. There'd be three cars going to same direction on a two lane road. For all the talk about Jamaicans being laid back, that goes out the window once they step foot in their cars.

I was on my way to school once, goin Northbound on Los Robles towards Pasadena...

link to map

I was going about ~30-35 which is plenty fast for the residential area, some bish in a Jetta was tailgating me bad, I did the stop at Fillmore and she rolled through it and gunned it and got next to me trying to pass me on the center divider. I was pissed that she was tailgating me so I floored it and obviously she couldnt overtake me in her POS. She tried slowing down and I purposely slowed down to not let her get back behind me

So we reached the red light at California and the stupid idiot was gonna stay on Los Robles so she had to make line behind about 3 cars, I had to turn right on California so if the stupid idiot would have stayed behind me she would have still been in the same spot she must have felt like is300eater

I actually had that happen on the highway on christmas eve. At first I thought something was wrong with my car and maybe the person was trying to let me know. Then I realized that many people don't realize that xenon lights aren't high beams. Maybe my lights hit the person's rear-view over a hill or some bumps and pissed them off.

Yea, i never understand the people who go under the speed limit and then flash there highbeams when you pass them. I would say that 90% of drivers on the roads are idiots.

A lot of people are idiots out there. Thankfully when I drive around the mountain passes in my area, a lot of people are courteous and pull over when there isn't room to pass or a broken line, and I learned to do the same. The highway is a different story, you think its bad now, I would hate to be that guy daily driving a 911.

I'm very impatient with bad drivers. High beams don't make me flinch, and I always pass on the left side anyways after leaving my signal on for 2 seconds or more - unless someone is being a douche and driving 55 in the left lane. I almost ran someone off the freeway like that before, bad idea... I was almost late for a final, and traffic was slightly congested, and there was no way to pass because someone was going 55 in the left lane. I cut them off really close and I saw them swerve in my rear view, and thats when I felt kinda guilty. But then they remained in the left lane at the same speed.

Its funny when someone speeds in a residential though. When I used to drive the painfully slow Civic, I would pull out from the curb and it would take a while to get to 35. Some asshole was going 50+ (in a 35), and honked and flashed at me and tailgated me for half a block while I maintained a steady 35. I was tempted to gradually pull up the parking brake so he would rear end me, but nah. The guy was screaming his head off at the intersection.

Does it?

One of life's many mysteries. Actually it doesn't, unless I'm missing something here. I'm tempted to go outside right now and check. I do know that in my car at least, when its dark outside and I release the parking brake, the headlights automatically turn on.

Then again I may just be a dumbass, I didn't know that Jewish people don't celebrate Christmas until a few weeks ago.

the parking brake does not trigger the brake lights.

so far all the cars i've passed have been a lot slower than mine so accelerating is not a problem and even if they tried to speed up to block me...good luck.

There was a guy in an ES 300 that was being a showoff on the hwy the other day. swerving in and out of traffic. once it opened up i was near him, he wanted to cut me off so i booted it and didnt let him in my lane. just before he would have missed his exit i eased off the throttle to let him in, I smiled and motioned he could come in front... boy did that piss him off.
