Opinions of GX470 and Land Cruisers
I have been itching around looking at getting something bigger. I know gas prices are high and what not, but having something a little higher off the ground would be nice. Have more space is really the issue.
What are your opinions of the GX470? They seem to be very reliable. How about the suspension, is it an air suspension? What are your thoughts?
Also, what are your thoughts on the Toyota Land Cruisers. They seem to get about 14MPG, not much better than an 18-wheeler, but seem to be bulletproof in terms of reliability.
If you were going to buy a used one, how many miles would you say is too many? There are various GX's with about 70K on them and Land Cruisers with 85K.

I really like both, as far as SUV's go, they are both very truck like, but luxurious. Land Cruisers are very unique vehicles and are more similar to the Lexus LX then the GX. That said the GX is a fantastic SUV, I would not worry about reliability on either, both are outstanding. The Land Cruiser will probably be more expensive to maintain in the long run and is not a friendly do it yourself vehicle, they remind me a lot of Range Rovers, but they have Japanese reliability, it's odd. The GX is not as refined, or unique as a similar year Land Cruiser, but is very nice and cheaper to repair, when it needs something. I don't think you can go wrong with either, they are both great vehicles. I think if it were my money, and I was on any sort of a budget I would go with the GX.

My ex had GX470 and it was very comfortable. She didn't have any problem with it. I think last time I checked, it had about 60k miles on it.

I am a fan of the Land Cruisers/LX4XX models. You can't go wrong with either of those twins or the GX. But I don't like the swing out tailgate on the GX, nor the pyramid-tall outline of the vehicle.
Only fault I find with the Land Cruiser is that even though it's not a Lexus, it costs as much as one, and Toyota still reserves the luxury touches for the Lexus LX model.

I think Car & Driver had a compara-test (07 Fall ?) among the bigger Lux SUVs, like MDX, GX, X5, ML350, XC90, Land Rover etc .... GX placed behind X5, MB ML350, and MDX .... also my brother has a GX470 (drove it numerous times on long & short trips) & IMO it doesn't handle as well as my MDX ... with its 260 (?) HP V8, it's def. under power IMO .... nice fit & finish as it's a Lexus ... but I took a chance on a Honda SUV rather than a Toyota's and no regrets so far .... so my suggestion is to take a look at MDX & test drive it ... what have you got to lose ?

The Lexus GX470 is a really nice SUV! I love it but I had a girl complain to me though that it's too tall for her and when the wind blows it rocks the SUV too much just throwing it out there

Unless the OP is going 4-wheeling, I'd look at a Enclave/Acadia/Traverse instead.

I've driven the Toyota Prado, which is the Asian market equivalent of the Lexus GX. It's a fairly comfortable SUV, and can handle going offroad pretty well, which is why you see a lot of them in the Middle East & South Asia. I haven't personally driven the Land Cruiser, but SUVs that size become too big for me, so I prefer the Prado/GX

Due to the additional rugrat in the family, I've parted with my Rx400H (well wifey's) and gladly taken on a MDX ... def. MDX gives you a better road hugging sense of handling & control, not to mention the extrad HP comparing to Rx or Gx ... standard features are abundant and I'm sure it's very competitively priced (it's typical for Acura) ... test drive all of them if I were you and really take some mental notes .... you can compare them online all you want, but that real driving experience is something that might vary from person to person ....
Good luck !
