Opinions on the 2009-2014 Cadallic CTS-V

Hello all I was just seeing what opinions you all have on the CTS-V. I figured since this is an Acura site the opinions wouldn't be as biased as they would on Cadillacforums or something similar.

A little background before hand on cars I have owned:

1998 Nissan 200SX - sold
2002 Honda Accord EX V6 - sold
2003 Acura TL Type S - totalled
2006 Lexus LS430 -sold
2005 Honda S2000 - current weekend driver
2012 Infiniti M37 -current
2012 Acura TSX Wagon - wife's current

About a year ago I had a toss up on the M37 and ISF and I wanted something with more rear legroom. Hence the choice of the M37. It has been a wonderful car and the seats and gas mileage have been amazing! The sporty factor and enjoyment was greater for me then what I had with the LS430.

Now the CTS-V, recently I had an opportunity to drive one at the Houston Auto Show. It was a life changing event, seriously. I haven't stopped wanted the car since. I had a friend at Cadillac that let me test drive one with the wife. She was okay with it and I still had the same appreciation for it.

If I opt for a CTS-V it will be in 1 to 2 years. I'm trying to let depreciation work for me as I can not afford a 50K one, but a 40K one is more reasonable. :-) I will opt for the 2011 or newer as they had backup cameras standard. I feel this is a special car, unicorn car as I like to term them. The CTS-V also in my opinion is a good compromise between luxury, comfort, and practicality.

Pros
  • sedan, this will be my pick since we already own a wagon.
  • 4 seats
  • insurance would stay the same roughly
  • ride is on par with what I am comfortable with
  • uniqueness of this car
  • engine power obviously

Cons
  • Gas mileage 14 city 19/20 highway
  • I'll probably get a ticket lol
  • Technology is a little dated, no BT streaming for music
  • Optional Recaro seats are stiff, I would still opt for these though.

So what are your thoughts pros and cons?

Neuronbob I need your help! lol

NB is a pro and would answer any questions you have.

Of course, most of us are going to go say "Stop what you're doing, get in car and drive to dealer and buy it, no questions asked, or we'll take your man-card."

Yeah, I think pretty much all of us are in love with the V here. Do it (in the future)!

Ok I don't want to put a damper on the Cadi-V love since I'm a HUGE fan of it too, but the only con I've heard from all the reading (*note I said reading, not real life experience, so take that with a grain of salt) is that the rear leg room isn't that great for the size of car it is and I see that room is a somewhat important part of it for you. But otherwise I've heard nothing but outstanding things about them.

I guess I'm the resident expert on the V here.

First off: If you have concerns about paying for gas, do not bother buying this car. I commute in my car and if you look in my CTS-V thread further down the forum page, you will see my mileage. I can afford the gas and so don't care particularly that I have to fill up every five days on average.

Still here? OK.

I've never gotten a ticket in the V. V1 or Escort is a virtual requirement in this car because you WILL take it to triple digits once or twice, even if you don't mean to. It's so easy to do.

Price. The 2009 Vs are now solidly in the mid-upper $30k range. If $40k is your budget, you are really interested, and you don't mind a high fuel bill, go do it, the sedan is the most plentiful of the three variants and you will find one. Just make sure it's not been modded or in an accident, just like with any used performance car, unless you want a modded car. You can add a backup camera aftermarket if you need to, and even one with OEM parts. The 2011s are still in the mid-upper $40k's unless they have high mileage.
--Bottom line: Go do it already.

Seats. I owned a V sedan with regular seats, and now own a V wagon with Recaros. The regular seats are competent for boulevard driving but the cushion is too short for people like me with long legs. With regular seats, I had to adjust the seat upward to be comfortable. The Recaros are MUCH better. In fact, don't buy this car without Recaros. They are virtually infinitely adjustable, fitting multiple body types and, in my case, there is an adjustable thigh support. They offer excellent support in the turns. And they have the cool "V" logo on them, unlike the regular seats.
--Bottom line: get the Recaros, you won't be sorry.

Rear leg room: Not quite BMW 3-series bad, but not great. My 7-year-old fits back there nicely, and with the seat midways forward the way my wife likes, an adult can fit back there. Four people will fit but the person behind me (5'10", long legs) will complain.

Tech: Dated nav system, fair-poor voice recognition. I mostly use my iPhone for navi anyway nowadays, so I don't care about navi tech. You can do BT audio with a dongle attached to the USB port in the car, though.

Transmission: My sedan was automatic, my wagon is 6MT. If you are a drag racer or interested in easy driving, get the automatic. If you are interested in actually driving the car and feeling out the limits of the LSA engine, get the 6MT. The 6MT is simply more engaging. It is fun. It is almost Honda-easy to use. You don't have to jam the gears. It is sublime. You won't win any drag contests with the 6MT unless you know how to use its no-lift shift feature.
--Bottom line: get the 6MT unless your wife drives the car too and can't drive stick.

More to come, have to go back to work.

Buy it, put on a shorter blower pulley and tune it. If you care about MPG run far away.

Beyond the Tesla, I think the V is probably the best American sedan money can buy right now. It does multiple things, & it does them all very well.

I forgot to add some details regarding my lifestyle.

Currently I am expecting my first son/daughter at the end of Oct. So that is my main priority and concern before committing to a V. This is also the reason why I am waiting 1-2 years. I want to make sure I have diapers and food taken care of 1st.

Secondly, I do not commute that much for work right now. However, I may be working at another location in town soon which would up my commute to 40-60 miles 5 days a week. So gas would be a concern but the pay I would get would compensate for the usage.

Check, I currently have a Valentine 1 V1.8 with Euro Pop.

I am "stalking" local dealerships. What I am trying to find is a low mileage 2011 which here they are still commanding close to 50K. I would like to find one priced at 40K and then add on the GM 100k warranty, about $2,000. So ideally I would like to be around the 42,000 before tax, after would be even more amazing!

--Bottom line: get the Recaros, you won't be sorry.

Thank you for the input! Since I didn't have prolonged seat time it is good to hear from someone who has. Recaros will be non-negotiable requirement of my V.

Rear leg room: Not quite BMW 3-series bad, but not great. My 7-year-old fits back there nicely, and with the seat midways forward the way my wife likes, an adult can fit back there. Four people will fit but the person behind me (5'10", long legs) will complain.

I am willing to compromise a little here. I sat in the seats and they weren't terrible, just not as roomy as the Infiniti M37.

Tech: Dated nav system, fair-poor voice recognition. I mostly use my iPhone for navi anyway nowadays, so I don't care about navi tech. You can do BT audio with a dongle attached to the USB port in the car, though.

I mainly use Google Maps as well. I was just seeing if there were any quirks that you have noticed in your ownership.

Still in somewhat of debate. My wife doesn't drive stick. However, if I sold my s2000 I would miss having a manual. The automatic is a good compromise for the daily driving it will see.

HOWEVER, if an amazing deal comes around.... well my wife will have to learn manual!

More to come, have to go back to work.

Neuronbob

My wife found your input insightful and informative. I also added the additional joke of our push towards the V purchase being, "doctor's orders."

Thank you everyone for the positive comments and support towards the V. I am hoping to make this happen sooner than later. However, I am patient and I can wait until the right one comes along.

Couple other comments:

My son was three when I bought my first V. You can get two car seats into the rear seat of the V sedan, easily. I only had to put one back there. I used a rear-facing seat at first, a Britax Marathon. We then moved on to forward facing seats, then a booster seat, and recently with the V wagon, my now almost 8-year-old is now tall enough to sit without a booster seat at all.

Speaking of kids.....you can buy a lock pick for the navi system that allows you to play video DVDs while driving. This is a boon for youngsters like my son, though nowadays, I just toss him his iPad mini and he's just as well.

Known issues with the V:
Clicking wheels--from the interface between mating surfaces of the hub and rotor (iron against aluminum. Solutions are cleaning the mating surfaces every few months, high-torque of new lug nuts (140 lb-ft). This is a minor annoyance that does not affect operation of the car.

Crabbing tires--the stock Michelin PS2 tires bunch up and the treads sound as if they are popping in low-speed turns when it is cold (under about 45 degrees). The answer to this problem is, if it's cold routinely (i.e. during the winter), change to winter tires. Otherwise, not a big deal and not harmful to the tire or car, just annoying.

Loose carpet on the outboard side of the driver's cockpit floor--this has been a known manufacturing issue for the entire run of the 2G CTS-V. My car has this problem as well. It can be fixed by velcro-ing the carpet in place. Again, a minor annoyance that does not affect operation of the car, but c'mon GM, really? A problem for six years of the model run?

Groaning rear differential--this occurs exclusively when the transmission/diff are cold upon being first used; this sound appears on low-speed turns. Fix is to change the diff fluid and to be sure that there is GM's LSD additive. Again, an annoyance and not a deal-breaker.

Noisy supercharger--from the use of a spring-loaded isolator. Sounds like marbles. GM initially said it was a normal feature of the supercharger that avoided a different type of noise, but owners discovered that using a solid isolator removed the sound. GM recently decided to make a solid isolator the official fix. I had my SC replaced last month for a frozen bearing (makes a howling noise) and I am told the new SC had a solid isolator.

Engine and transmission failures are rare; the drivetrain of this car is robust.

I live where it would be best to have one, but sadly my budget doesnot allow. 1 in college and I have more heading there.

But if you can swing it, do it.

Last, reliability. Very reliable. If you take care it it, it will take care of you. On the Cadillac forums, there are multiple over 100k miles Vs now and they hold up well with normal maintenance. Some people need a diff replacement but this is by no means common. (This was a huge deal on the 1G V so people are sensitive about it.)

Forgot a couple of interior quirks. The piano black PLASTIC center console scratches if you breathe on it. That is something that never fly in a Honda. The Recaro seats sometimes rock, but mine have not yet. This is fixed by replacing the seat rail. Look for the rocking (it will be obvious) in any v you look at.

The magic number for drivetrain reliability is 650 whp. If you mod above that, engine and tranny are at risk of breaking. In other words, a 2.5 inch (smaller) pulley + intake + exhaust + tune is safe and reliable. I did this with my first V and ran that convo for over 30k miles, 550 whp, no problems whatsoever in the drivetrain.

Cliff's notes from all my posts: reliable supercar that goes anywhere, anytime, easily daily driven, and will carry your family in comfort. Just a few quirks and terrible gas mileage to deal with. Bought mine because I wanted v8 power and a sports car I could take my son to Cars and Coffee in.

HTH.

Oh, yeah, and a flashy blue 556 hp 6MT WAGON is f-ing cool. It just is. Unfortunately, production of the wagon is ending, used wagons are out if your price range, and even I am weakly thinking of parking mine in a feeble attempt to slow depreciation.....NOT.

I have to get in the usual S2000 owner's answer for this:

You'll be back!

I am truly lucky to own both a CTS-V and an S2000. Totally different cars for different moods.
