"One of the World's Great Sports Cars" - MT
So said Motortrend in their 07 Buyer's Guide - when talking about the S2000. My S2000 ! Yep, its been a long time, but I finally picked up a brand spanking new Laguna Blue 2006 S2000. I got what I think was a fantastic deal on it, and I'm looking forward for years and years of great driving fun. ANd without further adieu: pics:
Lemme know what you guys think. Many thinks to Shoofin, Beltfed, and others for some choice last minute adivce just before I sealed the deal. Must....Go....DRIVE! I'll post drving impressions later.

Keeping out of VTEC for the first 600 miles is like.....giving somebody some porn and asking them not to whack off for a month! I have to keep it under 5500 rpms - even then it's an absolute blast to drive.
The gearbox is so direct, the shifts are short. The steering could use some extra feel to it, and at slow speeds (under 20mph) turn-in isn't super-sharp but it matures nicely and becomes extremely well weighted when hauling down a country road.
For some reason the RE050 tires on this car don't have the "raw" grip that I expected them to have - I have a feeling that something such as the PS2 Sport would give better grip. Or maybe I've just been too judicious with the throttle in corners The VSA system is absolutely brilliant - one of the best I've sampled. It let's you have a bit of fun, but then cuts in swiftly and deftly. Unless your driving really clumsily, the intervention would be unnoticable save for the blink of the light on the cluster.
The engine - a controversial topic for many who say that it "doesn't have enough torque to screw in a lightbulb". I'm not sure what the comparison is to (maybe 350z, Z4 and others sports roadsters in general), but as far as I'm concerned it has plenty enough for me - obviously no where near the feel of the VQ35 but I don't believe thats what excited me The torque feels even and flat all the way from 3000 - 5500. What really gets me going about this engine, is that it just feel so damn eager to rev, and have fun, no matter the speed and to a certain extent gear. I can't comment too much till I unleash some of the VTEC glory and see what it'll really do.
The chassis is stiff. Stiff. Really stinking stiff. Way stiffer than my TL. And the ride is way better than I was expecting. No jarring impacts in the cabin. I was really impressed.
It's tough to get inside (without leaning against the side bolsters and prematurely wearing them out) - I guess I have to adopt a way of getting in and out. Once inside though, it is ..... comfortable. Really comfortable. In terms of just driving position I prefer this to most other cars I've been in, including the TL. Maybe it cause I'm only 5'5".
I know Gavril has addressed the exhaust note of the vehicle's he's been test driving, so I'll attempt to do the same. I don't think its anything spectacular when I'm in it, but then I can only rev to 5.5 grand. It is nice and bassy when you step on it, but I wish it were a tad more aggressive and raspy, befitting the revvy, and high strung nature of the powerplant. A little more loudness wouldn't hurt. Who knows - my opinion might change when I wind it all the way to 8k.
Well, thats all thats come to mind right now. I'm reading some stuff online about breaking it in, and there are two different school of thought regarding this. I personally reckon I'll contine to keep her under 5500 rpms, till I'm at or near 600 miles. However, once its all warmed up, I have been pretty judicious with the throttle, and have planted it momentarily on some occasions.
Thanks for all the comments, and keep 'em coming.

Nice car bro. Instead of sliding in sideways, try going in ass first (backwards) then swinging your feet in. That'll prevent the wearing of the bolsters.

Beautiful car man!! I'm actually jealous; I've always wanted a S2000, but at 6'7" tall, most of which is legs, I can't fit.
I'd love to hear a sound clip of the engine hitting 8500+ rpm once you get it broken in. Since Honda bumped up the displacement to 2.2 liters, what is the redline now?

He thinks that the torque curve is nice between 3500 and 5500. Just wait until he can let the high cam turn over.
From a driver that's owned 2 S2Ks, congrats.

Congrats! That's the exact one I've been thinking about getting lately. Although the 2007 Imola Orange color may be interesting also.

I love that blue. If I didnt already have a blue car that looked very similar Id have to spring for one.

Thanks so much for the comments guys. This thing is my pride and joy, and truly I could not even WANT anything else - I would literally turn down something 4 times as expensive as the S2k even if I got it for free! - I'm happy with it, and can't wait to get to know it better. I'm hoping that its going to make ME a better driver, and give me an even greater appreciation for fine automobiles. With the TL and this, I can't ask for more.
The lease was 3yr/36k miles. I had anyways planned on buying the car, but since the lease worked out CHEAPER than financing over three years, I figured heck, invest the extra $$$ further and get more out of it, and then choose to buy out in 3 yrs. Terms were:
1000 Down,
360 a month (what i was quoted - I ended up not getting super preferred and they wanted to jerk me around) - I said I would budge $10 max a month, and so it worked out to $370. Just know that $360 is entirely doable if you qualify for super preffered. I ended up asking them to throw in wheel locks because of the last minute hassle and they agreed.
19722 Buyout
Every tax, fee, charge under the sun is included in the above. I reckon its a pretty sweet deal. The only stipulation was that I had to get something off the lot. Luckily, there was a Laguna Blue Pearl. I'm a major blue fan, and lucked out. Not to mention that the color is "somewhat" rare since its new for 06. I wouldn't be stretching the truth if I said that I've got so many compliments on the color, than on just the car itself! It is truely a beautiful color that has to be seen in person.
Shoofin (and others) - I most definetely encourage you to do it. Definetely. Let me put it his way - I got it at approximately 7pm on Sat with a full tank. Today (Monday) I just put in 11.8 gallons in the 13.2 gallon tank. This was just driving around town, enjoying the car, and savoring the driving experience. Its amazing. Be warned - I'm 5'5" and this car fits me like a GLOVE. But my neighbor whose around 5'11", and 190-200lbs could barely fit - his thighs were hitting the wheel (which can't be adjusted).
I did some reading on breakin and there seem to be two schools of thought here - either keep it under 5500rpms for 600 miles or wind it out occasionally during break in. I leaned towards the later. At 160 miles, I gave it a quick run in 1st to VTEC, and partially in 2nd............... amen Kurt_Bradley.........cause DAMN it was FUN! The "kick" caught me off guard even though I had previously driven two broken in S2k's in VTEC. Can't wait to really wind it out properly.
Once again, thanks for the comments. It's been a long time of saving and drooling, and I'm glad to finally have my "dream" car. Feel free to ask any further ?'s
P.S. 1st gen TL still kicks ass

You are correct. I realized this while researching it too. It wouldn't have mattered to me though. I didn't send in the application yet, I found out the program is good thru 9/6. I also found out that i'm better off putting it on my company insurance/dealer policy. It comes out to like $50 a year for the car. Yes, $50, as in Fifty Dollars. Why would I not get this car at that point?!??!?
I dunno, I have to think about it come more... :sigh:

Well, I'm a car dealer, I have dealer insurance that covers my dealer plates, inventory and any personal cars that I register under the company. So I'm still paying insurance (close to $10,000 a year) but it covers everything. My insurance covers up to any cars I have up to $30,000, the S2000 is about $35,000, so to increase my policy to cover up to 35k, will cost me $50 more per year. My max inventory cap that they cover is $150,000. I haven't carried any more than $75k lately, so I'm not worried about going over my limit yet. I could always increase the max cap when needed.

CRAP! My Honda rep told me that they had the car coming sometime in August. I figured it would give me some time to really think about it, if I need another expense on my head. She called me just now to tell me that it came in!
