I just went on a test drive of the A3 and was really unimpressed. I guess I'm just used to the TL. I was also looking at the Golf's cause I LOVE hatchbacks and the MPG would be sweet. I didn't find it all that "fun" to drive, but maybe I could make it fun.

I had to bump this thread, I'm working on a deal that will require me to drive between NC and NY probably once a quarter and my first thought was a 4 door Golf TDI! I'm doing a test run in the Si within the week, but I'm not expecting it to be a great experience. I expect to get 35+MPG, maybe high 30's, if I do local highway driving I can regularly get 31-32MPG. However, real world highway driving with the TDI has been reported as high as 50MPG+. With that type of range it would take maybe one refueling each way. Not to mention at highway speeds the Si is pushing 3k+ rpms at 72'ish miles/hour, I get good fuel economy but it's a little buzzy. There is no guaranty I will be making the trip, but if the proposal I submitted goes through I may look to make the switch sooner rather then later. I was shocked at how affordable a fairly loaded TDI Golf is.
One thing I did love about my MkIV GTI was the versatility, the hatchback was so freaking handy and as much as that particular car was a pile of shit, it was fun to drive!

You know I've given the redesigned Jetta TDI a thought. When that comes out and assuming it's still sold as a TDI, a chipped white or silver Jetta TDI with the DSG would happily replace my car.

I actually just toyed around with the idea of a MkVI TDI 6MT.... would be a sweet DD. Way out of my budget though
