2010 Golf TDI. Click on the 4-door TDI tab bottom left.

Well equipped, comfortable, refined, excellent handling. About as fast as my TSX, but WAY faster at part throttle with all that torque. A reflash apparently puts these things at 170 bhp and 295 ft-lbs......with an easy 40+mpg highway.
I just wanna the thing. My next car for sure.
I also drove a 2.5 and while I love the engine sound and power delivery, you can't up-content one to TDI spec. Doesn't get the mileage either.

Unfortunately.....bizarrely even, its the exact reverse. The factory is trickling out Golf TDIs because Jettas outsell Golfs 10 to 1 in the US, thus most of the TDIs out there are Jettas. There are but a handful of 2010 Golf TDIs on offer in Cali, and those are going at full sticker...even marked up beyond that in some cases.
Frankly I'll probably be looking at a 2011 model when the time comes. No worries.

Yep, that's pretty much the case, equipment is nearly the same. The suspension is unique apparently, there's a couple of threads raging on vortex about spring rates and such. The current info is that the TDI has stiffer springs than the 2.5, but softer than the GTI. Same thing with the dampers. Whatever it is, they hit the sweet spot as far as I'm concerned. Some new GTI owners are reporting a jiggly ride over bad roads, nothing like that here.

nice.... I've always been interested in diesels but I've never driven one before. My friend is looking to get a Jetta actually.... gonna let him know to try out the diesel too

I have liked the MKV with the TDI engine for a long time, the wounds have almost healed from my experience with the MKIV I owned and I would consider one in the not so distant future.... then again I plan on moving to the dirty south and the 2011 Mustang sounds like fun too!

this is one of the considerations for the new vehicle (my wife is taking over the tsx and CRV is going to sister for college). between tdi golf, mazdaspeed3, or civic si....
I think the tdi will win in the end due to lower fuel cost, lower insurance, and after exhaust intake and reflash it will put up nasty torque

^^ I love the Jetta Sportwagen TDi.
It's one of the best looking wagons out there...and the icing on the cake is the diesel!

I'm so weak. I want to hold out to at least test drive a 2012 Focus but I don't know if I'll have the willpower.

How much more is a Golf R? I don't really care about mileage
I'm trying to get a used one with at least a couple years of warranty still on it. I'm smitten with that blue R they always show in press ads

You can get a Mk V R32 for about $24-26k with decent miles. DSG only.
The Golf R is going to be AWD with the 270hp TTS engine and a manual transmission (or DSG). Rumors are 2-door or 4-door and it'll stay close to the current R32's MSRP which was $32k IIRC.

oh yeah, sorry. I keep forgetting that its not been announced for NA yet
I was so glad to hear that have a 6MT option also. I really like the way R32s sound but I prefer the 2.0 TSI for moddability

I kind of like that the A3 is available with the TDI motor now too, but it's still a bit pricey for what you get and they are a hair too new to have any available used.

I had to bump this thread, I'm working on a deal that will require me to drive between NC and NY probably once a quarter and my first thought was a 4 door Golf TDI! I'm doing a test run in the Si within the week, but I'm not expecting it to be a great experience. I expect to get 35+MPG, maybe high 30's, if I do local highway driving I can regularly get 31-32MPG. However, real world highway driving with the TDI has been reported as high as 50MPG+. With that type of range it would take maybe one refueling each way. Not to mention at highway speeds the Si is pushing 3k+ rpms at 72'ish miles/hour, I get good fuel economy but it's a little buzzy. There is no guaranty I will be making the trip, but if the proposal I submitted goes through I may look to make the switch sooner rather then later. I was shocked at how affordable a fairly loaded TDI Golf is.
One thing I did love about my MkIV GTI was the versatility, the hatchback was so freaking handy and as much as that particular car was a pile of shit, it was fun to drive!

It's not fun driving, but it's quite remarkable how a car with this much turbo power and great handling can at times produce fantastic mpg as well.
The Golf TDi mpg numbers should get you crazy highway mpg.
