Sorry to go off the list but, for me its a no-brainer:
Though a 15 year old Pontiac, they retail for $16G currently.

well..... since i just got rid of my beloved '85 MC SS i guess the answer is i DID own one. kept it 20 years. reliability aside it was a great car to drive. everywhere. highway, twisty mountain roads, grocery store, car shows, strip, even work. 20 mpg city, 25 mpg hgwy. not too bad for toy.
hated to give it up but i lack the facilities to restore and maintain an antique. gave it to my brother. he loves it just as much as i did. sorry to see it go.
on a completely different bent...
if you're sold on muscle cars check out 2 new contenders. 1st the Mercury Murderer. you can still find new ones on dealer lots. i've driven a few and they're a BLAST to drive. cobra v8, 320 HP i think. very fast, corner great, big & roomy. only drawback is the gas milage & ford quality/reliability rep. since i've been driving ricers for awhile now i just can't go back to mediocrity. but i've given it VERY serious consideration. the silver ones are sweet.
if you prefer japenese hardware check out the '04 infinity M45. WOW! i've driven one. 340 HP v8. its real. i'm ready to marry the engine. the car is also beautifullly crafted. as soon as you open the door you can tell its a worthy ride. unfortunately its $45 to $50K, gas milage is in the 17 city/22 hgwy range, way expensive to insure, and the steering is heavy & slow. it dampens the overall fun factor. but the engine's a keeper. its the same engine as the Q45. if you can afford the price of admission check it out as well. its a little goofy looking but if it performs near as well as the M its a keeper 2.

Overall I've always liked the 1970 Yellow & Black GSX.
Of course the "World's Fastest NHRA Super Stocker" is a ... a 198 cu. in. Turbo Regal, like the one above, that has run 7.90's

In my younger years, the only american made car I've ever considered was the 1969 Camaro Z-28 - 454 HO - 4 SPD which had a 454 HO 425HP Crate Motor. Other than this car, I preferred german skinned cars; especially the 1972 911S Targa.

If I'm not mistaken, the fastest stock time was a 13.10 for the 454 LS6 and 13.12 for the 426 Hemi Cuda. These were the reported best times for a competely factory stock car with no mods or even tires. So the 70s bias belted tires just went up in smoke big time. With a set of small slicks these cars ran mid 12s, still stock.
There are some factory tuners from Yenko and COPO that produced better times, but these are considered factory stock. I'm trying to find the link, but for some reason I think the fastest of these was either the ZL1 Camaro (possibly a COPO or Yenko) and the COPO Nova. For some reason the Nova rings a bell.
Also not mentioned are the 70-74 Challengers. These were great looking cars as well.
Also, the Cobra was not a true Muscle Car by definition. It was more of a sports car/roadster and in a different class.
