Oh snap! Nail in rear tire.
And here I thought I was going to have a good Monday.
Drive into work today, parked in a garage near the office. As I'm getting out of the car, I hear a hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Crap.
Turns out a nail went right through the tread of the driver rear tire. Actually, it looks like it went through one of the water channels, so it's deep in the tire. Right in the middle. Damn it.
So, what are my options? Obviously, I have to put the spare on. But do I get the tire plugged? Can I even get the tire plugged? Or do I need to get new tire(s)?
I have about 10K miles on the tires. Wear in the back is good, but they're certainly worn. I'd say I've got another 15K left on them. The fronts look good.
So... Do I need two tires in the back? I doubt I can replace the one that is damaged...
Or do I just get four new ones?
Just another muckin' funday...

lol
I figured it would be patchable. I was just concerned about the tire integrity. But it's right in the middle of the tread.
Turns out it was a rather large piece of glass now a nail. I'm going to take it over to Fletcher Infiniti on N. Clark over lunch.
BTW... How long are those spare tires good or. The dude that I spoke with at Infiniti Roadside said only 50 miles!!!???

Get it patched. Like said, it's not a problem as long as it's not in the sidewall.
And the spare is intended to get you to the nearest service center, so 50 miles sounds about right.
As for tire integrity, a patched tire will no longer have the same speed rating as it did before. It will have dropped by one speed rating (according to an article I read in Road and Track a while back).

Is the spare the same diameter as the stock rear tire?
Running two diff size (diameter) tires on the rear of a RWD drive car can sometimes cause probs with the diff. One side spinning faster than the other for many miles will cause a failure. Just check the manual to be sure.

That's a good question.
Roadside said the tire was "deisgned" to work with my car. The car has a staggered setup... There is a height difference between the front and back wheels; 1".
I need to drive 2 miles to get to the dealer. I better not die. j/k

Tire is completely damaged.
It was a HUGE piece of glass. The patch wouldn't cover it all.
Dealer wanted $392.50.
Still driving on the donut.

Time for some new rubber all around; what are you rolling on now?

The OEM Mich. Pilots that came with the car.
Great tires, but pricey.
If the tread is still good, which I think it is, I'm probably going to just get one.
I can get it through tirerack for $275 and take it to the Nissan dealer and they'll mount it for $20.
Much better than the $340+ quotes I've been getting.

Oh and when you buy your next tire... buy the replacement warranty with it. I always do that through discount tire. Anytime the tire has a bubble or a flat they will replace it for free.
Hell my moms tires were bald yet they had bubbles in them and discount tire replaced them anyways.

It's interesting to call around and get the prices...
Costco: Can't even get the tire - Short supply, dealers get first crack.
Discount Tire: $320.83
Midwest Tire: $332.00
Levin Tire: $345.90
TireRack: $275.42 + $20 to mount at the dealer.

Indeed.
But I think what makes the difference for me is the fact that the a dealer that has seen this tire and rim before will be doing the job.
DiscountTire mentioned that could do "something" but I really don't feel like having them f'up the rims. I guess I run that risk anywhere, but I'll take my chances at the dealer, I guess.
