That's Freddie Spencer's 1984 NSR500, what's very different and also interesting is that the fuel tank is below the motor an the 2-stroke exhaust expansion chambers are aove the motor where the fuel tank normally is.

The engineering thought behind this was to get the Cg as low as possible. However what was discovered in testing was quirky handling because a motorcycle rotates around it's Cg it's better to have the mass centralized around the middle of the bike not down low. When the fuel tank lighted this bikes' handling changed so it took Fast Freddie alot of his great skill to get 3 wins with this bike. For 1985 the fuel tank was repositioned to above the motor.

^^ That's nuts. The heat dissipation from the pipes had to be unbearable for the rider.

I thought the tank mounted down low was a bit odd, but I didnt know the history behind it.

So true, Freddie hated riding it and the mechanics hated working on it. I can only imagine how hot his arms must have been.

new MV Agusta!

http://www.mvagusta.it/it/news/nuovo...ndri-mv-agusta

28 marzo 2012
