would you pay the $2500 for a custom paint job from VW? You coulda went with racing green, or something. I’d imagine the wrap wouldn’t be any cheaper than that.

TacoBello 11-09-2018 02:41 PM

Racing green and gold BBS rims :pimp:

rockstar143 11-09-2018 02:44 PM

I got quoted $1500 to do the wagon at one point...
but that was on the low low from a guy in Dade county that was just getting started.
I probably should have gone for it.

I would have if it was an option. The issue would have been that it wouldn't have been actually $2500, it would be much more than that given that it would be a special order and therefore at MSRP and not $3k below (and $1k below invoice) like I paid for mine. So, in reality, it would be a $5500 paint job.

Also, the expanded color choices are for 2019+ models. It wasn't available for 2018. Only choices were black, white, gray, red, or blue.

weird that Canada got the color options before the US. I forgot you don’t have it yet.

and you’re right about the price. That’s why I don’t think it’s worth it. I’d like racing green or copper orange metallic, but not for 3k CDN, plus markup, plus delivery and destination, plus taxes, when I can get a barely used 2018 for almost 10k less.

rockstar143 11-09-2018 03:58 PM

Yeah, the TEAL color is hot...so are a few others...
but not for that kinda scratch.
Although if you were hellbent...then getting it already painted from factory is the only way I'd go.

oonowindoo 11-09-2018 04:39 PM

Do you have to change the color on your registration if you wrap your car?

TacoBello 11-09-2018 04:46 PM

Nope. Color hasn’t actually changed.

oonowindoo 11-09-2018 04:53 PM

Who would have thought this was a wrap?
http://wrapfolio.com/gloss-dark-grey-s2000-wrap/

forget about paying $5k for BMW Individual color... just pay half and wrap it.

rockstar143 11-09-2018 09:32 PM

I am kind of a purist but a wrap is a good idea if you need a color change for sure.

dwb993 11-10-2018 11:18 AM

Do they make an Imola Orange wrap? Wait...

rockstar143 11-10-2018 01:55 PM

LOL...have you seen the new NSX in orange?
I think they make a close color to Imola for wrap for sure.

oonowindoo 11-12-2018 12:04 PM

I think nowadays, if you can think of a color, they probably have a wrap for it...

We twins

Last quote (rough) was ~$3k all done at a really reputable shop I have a relationship with.

Costco 11-12-2018 04:11 PM

How reversible is a wrap though, really?

I worked with a guy who had his E-Class wrapped, looked really good, and was pricey. Don't remember how much exactly.

2-3 years later, he decided to peel the wrap off. Either he didn't do it correctly or it wasn't applied properly. Wrap didn't come off cleanly, it left adhesive behind and ruined parts of his paint. I don't know the exact story, but it looked like shit.

If you go to a reputable shop and they know what they're doing, you're good to go? Or does it matter if you live in a humid or cold climate?

oonowindoo 11-12-2018 04:30 PM

Did he just yank that wrap?

If he had any experience with vinyl, he would know to use a heat gun or at least a blow dryer to remove any kind of Vinyl, especially if it had been baked under the sun for years. If he did right, they should come off pretty easily.

Same thing as window tint. Residue will be left behind when they try to remove the tint and they usually use a razor to remove the residue. But since wrap is on the paint, not glass, you will have to let it heat up before removing.

Costco 11-12-2018 04:31 PM

I'm not sure tbh. The guy was not the type of person I would spend a lot of time talking to, normally.

I don't even remember his name  so I'm probably getting some of the details wrong.

TacoBello 11-12-2018 04:46 PM

Wraps should only be left on a car for a certain period of time. If it is only rated for 3 years, and is left on to the 5 year mark, it will be a bitch to remove even if it is still in good condition. You have to follow the rules with wrap.

It’d be interesting to know how many years his stuff was rated for and how long he actually had it on for. I imagine regular extreme sun exposure likely has some sort of impact as well.

oonowindoo 11-12-2018 05:04 PM

Wrap is not meant to replace paint. I think many people had the idea all wrong.

It is for a temporary 3-5 years of fun and remove and change it to something else. Or for commercial purposes.

The flip side is.... i think most of the wrap will be pretty beat up by 3-5 years mark anyway... But hey at least your original paint should be still good assuming you didnt do something stupid with the wrap.

rockstar143 11-13-2018 07:16 AM

I think the 3 year is for warranty, not a must remove by then.
If adhesive stayed behind it was probably not a good quality material.
That's my guess...and a big part of the cost is for the good quality stuff
so a lot of people probably cut corners since it eats into profits.

This is a long video, but it's a clean S2k:

Points for keeping a Honda engine in it too. I wanted to do this for years, but didn't want to sink the money into it.

Yes it is, looks like they just washed it!

I don't know man, other than the LS swaps into old Volvo wagons (because of the lulz when you dust a 911 in a shitty Volvo wagon), engine swaps don't really do much for me. I feel like cars have a character and swapping the motor changes that. I personally would rather change the whole car at that point.

00TL-P3.2 11-13-2018 10:01 AM

 Depends on the car I think.
Flyin Miata turnkey LS Miata :yum: Expensive, but :drag:

rockstar143 11-13-2018 10:24 AM

Sam's a purist.
I also don't understand engine swaps unless you do them yourself and have used engines readily available.

CLtotheTL32 11-14-2018 06:29 AM

I like crazy builds like that, but they're not for me. They're fun to look at but I wouldn't want to own one

rockstar143 11-14-2018 08:00 AM

I'm sure if you owned it you wouldn't be like man, sure wish I owned a stock one.

civicdrivr 11-14-2018 11:07 AM

There's probably a ton of issues to iron out getting that to run properly. It's one of the reasons I never did a swap in the FR-S. That, and it's expensive as hell. If you have a business or race the car - something where you can make money off of it - then I'm all for it. But doing it just to do it...that's a lot of money you're never getting back.

It's like spending $10k on a lens and camera when you don't do any shoots

rockstar143 11-14-2018 01:56 PM

Only way is buy one that is already done but then you won't know all the quirks.
So again, only if you have the knowhow and access to junk engines.

thoiboi 11-15-2018 11:17 AM

I'd be perfectly happy with just a stock clean s2000..

rockstar143 11-15-2018 11:59 AM

That's how it starts, Johnny...
but I can tell you having had a reasonably modified one...they got this shit right from factory.
It doesn't NEED anything but if I had a must have list for OEM+ look...

15/20mm Spacers
Espelir Springs
UK Mod Exhast

That's it to start, visually the car is perfect that way.

oonowindoo 11-15-2018 12:17 PM

the car is so stiff, i dont think you will be able to read google map while driving.
And the car is so noisy that you wont be able to talk to anyone while driving.... so yah phone mount is meh :D

thoiboi 11-15-2018 12:18 PM

So what you're telling me is that I need to buy gimbal for my phone mount? :tomato:

oonowindoo 11-15-2018 03:28 PM

You should not care about your phone when you are in an S2000.

because race car.

TylerT 11-15-2018 03:32 PM

Modifry mods solve most of the S2000 interior shortcomings ... just saying.

rockstar143 11-15-2018 07:03 PM

I instantly had another list of MUST haves from Modifry...
Backyard guys like that are the reason the S2000 is the bomb to own.

This. S2000 solves the problem by not giving you a (stock) place to put it. Golf solves the problem by flinging it into the back seat when you launch it.

"No rush to sell, I know what I have"

Except in the first time in the history of ever, it's actually arguably worth close to what the seller is asking for.
