Gas tax increase approved by California regulators

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Trips to the pump have not been especially kind to motorists as of late. But with prices well over $4 a gallon, drivers may be shocked to learn that the state of California is now raising the tax on a gallon of gas.

"There will be a 3.5-cent change," said Jaime Garza, spokesman with the California Board of Equilization.

That became official when the California Board of Equalization voted to approve the hike on Thursday. It's set to go into effect July 1.

State officials are loath to refer to it as a tax hike, instead calling it an annual adjustment required by law as part of the legislature's 2010 fuel tax swap.

"A lot of people have the misperception that the board of equalization is raising your tax. We don't have the authority to raise taxes. We are mandated by the legislature to adjust so that we have revenue neutrality," said Garza.

But whatever you call it, motorists are unhappy that California is bumping up gas taxes to the highest in the country at a time when gas is already near record high prices.

"We're not paying enough for gas that we need to have another tax on top of that? I think it's ridiculous," said Cynthia Dillard of San Bernardino.

I've always been amazed at this. When regular was 40cents premium was 50cents. Just now dawned on me that there was no midgrade. The 20 cent upcharge for premium seems like a bargain with gas at even $3.

Well...I don't get gas from Boston
1- Quality sucks
2- Expensive...I saw Vpower for 3.99 or something yesterday.

I always go 20 miles up north where parents live... use same gas station and Vpower all the time

Difference? A lot
Torque and MPG

Lot of people notice it too
Had a conversation with motor heads at gas station couple times.
One had vette one had Mini S

and it's the cheapest gas station I see around as well

$3.999/gallon for premium @ Costco in Alhambra, CA last couple of days-- hey, at least it's below $4, which it hasn't been for a while.

Why would you want it to be 8 cents more?

Paid $3.68 on the last tank and got excellent mileage out of it too. Whatever gas I got at the NC/VA border had too much ethanol in it.

Why would you bump it 3 cents... just leave it as it is was last week 3.69
That annoyes me haha

The reason I would want FRS is because of the MPG
Both highway and city is better than TL

Not in my experience. The CL and the FRS get the same mileage. I only have to run the CL up to 3500rpms during daily driving since it makes decent torque down low. I need to rev the piss out of the FR-S (usually 5krpms+) to get it to move out the same, which is why Im averaging 26.4mpg lifetime in the FR-S and 26.6mpg lifetime in the CL.

Highway driving, if there are hills involved, goes to the CL too since I can average 31-32mpg in that while I struggle to break 30 in the FR-S. No torque

$3.49 for the past 2 weeks. Weird how I estimate if my mileage will be good or bad, but this week it was the opposite of what I thought. Figured I'd be at around 18MPG and I got 19.4. Still wish I would get 20+ consistently but my city driving must kill it.

$3.59 with 10¢ discount at Kroger tonight. Ended up getting 30.2mpg on the last tank. I'm really surprised and don't know how I managed that. Did the math three times too.

30.2 avg?
Which is good right?

I am getting better mileage lately too. Ok just replaced the top o2 sensors but I guess warm weather helps...
No more remote starting the car anymore too...

About $3.35/gal for 87 an hour south of Raleigh. Premium is about $3.80. What happened to the 20 cent difference between 87 and 93?
