The Official EV Thread?
Hi All,
Longtime lurker here, showing face... I've been Acura'less since 2006, but Acurazine is the only forum I've always checked in on over the years, Car Talk in particular.
I've owned a few different cars since my 2001 Acura CL and bought a Tesla Model 3 a few months ago.
I searched to see if we had a thread talking about Tesla's or EV's in general, so wanted to get the conversation started!
Anyone else here own any EV's?

Don't have a EV. But would love to replace my wife's current lease with one. Just not sure its feasible for us just yet. Mainly, we are unsure of the ability to install a charger in our garage. We live in a condo with a big communal garage, and while there are people who have EV's down there, no one has installed a charger yet. Not sure how much of a giant mess it would be to have it hooked into our specific electrical feed.
And as for EV's...can't afford one but I'm really interested in the upcoming Rivian models.
I've also seen a few etrons now and they look great.

Hopefully prices start dropping as the used/off-lease EV's start hitting the market. I also see prices getting very competitive in 2020/2021 when most of the brands start releasing more EVs.

Got my first chance to drive an EV last week. My parents in law bought a new Model X, all the trimmings, top of the line. Cost them nearly $120K. I thought they were nuts. I couldn't ever see myself spending that kind of money on a car. But it's their money so more power to em.
The acceleration on the thing is insane. You can peel out all four wheels if you stomp on it. I love the lack of idling at stops. Range anxiety is still a real thing but it's just a matter of planning. There are only 3 superchargers in the whole state of Utah and the closest one to us is close to downtown SLC which is about 40 miles away. So they had to make sure they had 40 miles of range left so they could make it up there. But they were able to usually get about 250 miles on a full charge when using AC. That's impressive IMO.
Charging is kind of interesting. At 110V, you'll get about 3 miles/hour of charge. At 220V, 25 miles/hour. So it makes sense if you were to charge it overnight for at least 8 hours @ 220V. That's about 200 miles. 12 hours would give it a full charge.
Wattage is pretty high though. You're electric bill would certainly take a beating. Granted, still less than gas. At 220V, it's sucking up 40 amps. Most Tesla owners have a 220V 50 amp connection wired up (that's what they have). 220V at 40 amps is 8800 watts At $0.12 a kWh, that's about $1.05 an hour. With 12 hours, you're spending $12-$13 for a full charge. That's certainly less than a full tank of gas but it's not nothing. Their electrical bill has gone up about $70 a month. Still way less than gas but it's not necessarily pennies on the dollar. And many places have power costs as well above $0.12 a kWh which would further increase the price.
I don't think my next car will be an EV. There aren't enough offerings that provide the performance I'd like to see and are also within my budget. But I'd definitely be interested in a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

I've seen a few situations on some of the Tesla forums where some owners pooled together and asked the HOA to partially/fully fund a communal charging spot in their complex.

Thought has entered my head but .. A 2013-2014 P85 makes sense for me.
Sell both cars, $350/mo payment, save $250/mo in gas, free charging at home / work.
Some used examples come with unlimited supercharging and unlimited miles till 2021.

wait wtf i didn't know used ones came with free supercharging...
the ONLY gripe is that on the older models, the HOV sticker has run out and so my main reason for getting the EV is null and void

They don't have a traditional CPO program like BMW, but if you buy from the original owner you can have them add a Tesla extended warranty.
Buying used cars from Tesla is a tossup, they don't prep/fix a lot of them, so you might not like what you get, if you're having them ship it. You can back out of the deal, but you're out the transport fee.

I love my car, but it's kinda crazy to see how fast things change with pricing, auto-pilot/FSD, policies, etc.

I have driven Model X, 3 and i3. Even with my motion sickness, they are pretty good cars.
But i personally would never get 1 for 1 simple reason: It does not have the exhaust noise that i like.... and i hate that high pitch electronic noise it sometimes make when accelerating hard...

I want to make one, but unless you choose a lightweight car the cost of a good motor, controller, and batteries are still a pretty big chunk of change. I think I'll have to wait till electric trucks become a common thing, then wait for those trucks to start getting wrecked.
