I have both E55 and M5.
They are different. 1/4 mile M5 should take E55 provided if M5 launches well or not.
M5 has no low end punch as compare to E55 and requires you to be in the right gear and right RPM.
E55 can be driven by anyone hard and fast. M5 is a different story. E55 steering is a little too numb for me and the car felt heavy. M5 feels more live and easier to toss around.
My E55 came with better stock tire (PS2 vs Conti). Hence the grip is marginally better. I am getting new tire on the M soon, i think the grip should improve.
M5 is more fun car to drive. But it does not like to be stuck in traffict. The biggest problem with M5 is that to show its power, you are basically breaking the law anytime you want to open it up.
E55's torque can be used on daily drive. M5 can top 80 in 2nd gear, which is close to red line and that is where the fun it. E55's torque can be felt as low at 1500 rpm when the S/C engages (clutch driven- and my 04 has clutch failed once).
Off the line E55 wins, but past 100 mph, M5 is gone.

That's exactly what I was thinking
how they automatically come out of the dash like that.
