Now this is cool...(BMW IPod Integration)

Hey guys,

BMW made a huge announcement yesterday...since i'm a bit of a neophyte in terms of advanced posting (pics, etc) just go to the link.

BMW announced a full seamless IPOD integration, by the description and pictures, looks like they are doing exactly what we hoped Acura's MusicLink would do...all ipod info is transferred to the nav screen....maybe idrive isn't so bad afterall ;-)

That's awesome. I'm a big fan of having your whole MP3 collection on a screen like that and being able to scroll by artist/album/song/playlist.

yeah its pretty sweet, i'd say this...the 07 TLs might not have it but i bet given Acura's technology track record, they may have something that trumps this whenever they overhaul the next model...

ipods are definitely here to stay, I think we will see more and more car companies including this option on their cars.

So does the ipod plug in somewhere??? Help a non-ipod owner understand how the song lists are transferred to the cars stereo.

info:

The new Interface is compatible with all iPods with a dock connector, including the iPod nano and the fifth generation iPod. The BMW iPod Interfaces integrate the iPod through a direct connection in the BMW glovebox, providing outstanding sound quality and constant power to the iPod all while your iPod remains protected and out of view.

is it compatible with any other mp3 player? (i just picked up a philips gogear not too long ago.)

not that I'll be buying a bimer any time soon ( ) but It looks like Mac is really still destroying the competition in this market.

a shame, because this player I've got is real neat.

why don't they just offer hard drives built into the cars already. Partner up with Apple or iRiver or someone to offer known interfaces, surprised this hasn't been done yet...

The new Lexus LS will have a hard drive built into their audio system.

This has been out for awhile. I installed this kit in my wife's X5 and it works great. Displays the song information on the MID in the instrument cluster, plus steering wheel audio controls work too. Not cheap though, but IMHO better than swapping disks in the CD changer.

i'd prefer that to be honest...that would only be inconvenient if you had to still use the ipod for track control...otherwise, what difference does it make? i'd rather have it out of site.

to your point, i do agree, it would be a *little* easier if they put the input in the center console...but meh...doesn't bother me too much....

I think because the majority of the population wouldn't know how to figure it out. Ipod is made for monkeys to understand. I've had an mp3 player hard drive (neo35) in my car for 5 years and counting.

Also hard drives are big. To take it in and out vs a little mp3 player is more convenient.
