New car-itis!!

Ok, I know you guys hardly ever see any "what car should I get" threads so I figured I'd be unique!

Anyway, the new car bug is hitting rather hard right now (as it does every 6 months or so) and I'm thinking of trading in my G37 (again). I definitely want to try something German this go-round and am thinking BMW, BMW, BMW (all these guys with new M3's are getting me thinking). So here's my short list (in order of preference):

1. 08-09 BMW M3 coupe
2. 08-09 BMW M3 coupe
(fiancee says it ain't happening)
3. 09 BMW 335i coupe
4. 08-09 Audi S5
(fiancee kicks me in the balls)
5. 09 Audi A5
6. 06-07 Porsche 911S

Anyway, just testing the waters. I checked out an 08 M3 at Tom Bush BMW yesterday and it was friggin awesome. My price range tops out at around $47k so I think I might either order a new 335i or wait around until the end of the year and try to get a deal on a slightly used M3. What you guys think???

CPO Porsche Carrera S or Corvette Z06

I had a tough time choosing between the two myself.

But honestly if you don't need rear seats at all, 335i and M3 wouldn't be really that much of an evolution of your G37S. Also check out 996 GT2s/GT3s, prices have been really low lately.

Lotus Elise SC?

I love the 911 too but at this point I'm really considering brand new 335i (with possible euro delivery)....

A 911 and 335i are worlds apart. Plus, you would save a lot of money by having someone else take the depreciation hit on the 911.

I would AT LEAST take a 997 C2S for a drive before ordering a 335.

Pretty sure either one of those will still be easily beyond his budget.

I've been helping a buddy research P-cars.

911, ya dumbo

1. you have an itch every 6 mo. to upgrade your car. stop meeting your goals half way! get a true sportscar.

2. you already have a sedan and truck.

3. surely the best bet, financially. if you tend to take depreciation hits with constant car upgrades, than why would you want a car like a 335 that is going to tire you a year from now? plus, buying a 911 will force you to buy used. better bang for buck.

4. you need a financial advisor

As much as I love the 997 I would not get an early 997 carrera(non-S) with a tiptronic transmission. My main complaint about used 911's is that it is nearly impossible to find a car optioned exactly as you would order it new, there are too many options. That said I absolutely love driving the 997, one of the few pricey cars I've driven that I actually felt was worth the money. They are reliable, fun to drive, relatively practical and fairly durable.

If a 911 fits in your lifestyle and budget presently I would not hesitate to investigate further. It's one of those cars that you look back at owning and relish the experience, good luck!

Great Minds Think alike:

My Current Car: 08 G35x
My Next Car: 2010 - 2011 M3 (Euro Delivery)
My Following Car After that : 911

If I was in your shoes at the current moment 08 M3 Coupe, I see those going as low as 45K, very tempting.

we have a disease!

As much as I love 911's the M3 or a 335 is the better choice. Much more practical, and as far as I remember this car is your DD. The trunk and back seat space is great in this car.
Between 335 and M3 ... first I would go used. There are great deals out there. I think You can pick a used 08 or maybe even an 09 M3 ....This car is unbelievable. I like it a lot better then the 335....but the 335 isn't bad by any means. I did not like the manual tranny in the 335. The M3 suspension is amazing, that and the sound of that v8 do it for me everyday! the pros for a new 335 would me the new I drive and WAAAY better gas mileage...it is pretty fast as well.
Good luck!

I just did some poking around, I don't think you're going to be able to find a good condition 08-09 M3 for under $50k

why would you drive the hell out of a roughly brand new car, that you would end up re-selling?

guess it's opinion based, but i treat cars like assets. i would only abuse a car if it was leased...or once the cost of resale fell below cost of repairs (thats when you know youre stuck with her until she dies...like most of our CLs)

Why treat it like an asset when what you're going after is the extra available performance? Everyone should buy a 328i then since it offers more than enough power for daily duties. I'm not saying one should driving at WOT or at break-necking speeds but I've always been a firm believer even if you buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini let alone a Bimmer, you should put some serious miles onto it.

if you were getting a car to push to the limits, why would you put yourself at risk at damaging something you own / hurting your resale?? if your initial intentions were to drive the hell out of it, then why not lease?

...sorry for side tracking...

guess it all depends on the definition of "driving the hell out of it"

911, but an 07 might be hard to find for that price. There aren't a ton of 06-S available for that price yet

Yeah, my heart is really set on an M3 but I just don't see it happening financially. I'm not planning on doing anything until the end of the year anyway so maybe the prices will be a bit lower by then....

...oh, yeah... I vote for the 911... classic lines, good reliability, fast... and probably alot less of a hurt on your wallet when something goes wrong...
