This is the first official photo of the Bentley GT coupe undergoing cold-weather testing in some secret arctic location. Although we saw the car in person on June 11, 2002, in New York City, security prevented us from photographing it ourselves.
With the anticipation of another solid finish at Le Mans for 2002, rejuvenated Bentley has unveiled its as-yet-unnamed, 4-passenger GT coupe. It's powered by a 6-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine that makes more than 500 hp. Bentley is keeping torque a secret for now. Although the engine is derived from the similarly configured powerplant used elsewhere in the Volkswagen group (Bentley's new owner), it was designed and developed by Bentley. And like the rest of the car, the W12 will be built in Crewe, England.
Performance claims predict the GT coupe will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and reach a maximum speed of more than 180 mph. Power will be fed through a new, paddle-operated 6-speed automatic gearbox and will be delivered to the road via all-wheel drive--a first in Bentley's history. The company says all-wheel drive was considered essential not only for safety but to enhance the car's everyday usability everywhere from metropolitan highways to ski resorts all over the world. Electronic Stability Control is also included.
Suspension is made up of a multilink rear axle with double wishbones in the front and the latest in electronic damping control. Fabled racer Derek Bell picked the final suspension-tuning setup. He tells the PM.Zone that if he could safely drive the car in the rain at speeds in excess of 150 mph--with three engineers on board--Bentley GT owners will surely find the car stable and secure at normal road speeds.
Full details of the GT coupe's interior will be released as its launch date nears, but there's no doubt it will be swathed in the finest wood, hides, carpeting and handcraftsmanship. Bentley claims seating and cargo space for four adults with ample legroom in the rear.
