new 2004 Bentley
It might be referred to rather cheekily as the mid-size Bentley, but the vehicle code-named BY611 is of huge importance to the British manufacturer. With it, Bentley will increase production by 600 percent and enter new territory against Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar.
The new coupe will be the first new model Bentley is introducing after the break-up with Rolls Royce. The four-door sedan will be presented to the public in January 2003. Surprisingly, however, it will be the GT Coupe that’s to be unveiled first – at a “major non-motor show event” as Adrian Hallmar, Bentley’s sales and marketing manager, says. Insiders believe this “event” will be the 24 Hours of Le Mans in mid-June this year.
The coupe variant has been shown to dealers and VIPs at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and Dirk van Braeckel, Bentley’s Director of Design, said that “we like to think we have created an automobile sculpture, bearing the coachbuilding cues typical of the cars we make at Crewe, with interiors that display all the handcrafted excellence in hide, wood and metal that is unique to Bentley.”
Clearly, the design of the world’s fastest four-seater in its day, the R-Type Continental of 1952, had a huge influence on the shape of the new Bentley Coupe. And the new coupe will be fast, too, wearing a massively reworked version of VW’s W-formation 12-cylinder engine under the hood, which is said to produce over 500 hp after tweaks by experts at VW-owned Cosworth Engineering. That should be enough to reach Bentley’s target of matching the performance of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Ferrari’s 360 Modena.
Although assembly and painting of the steel body will be undertaken at Volkswagen’s Mosel plant in Germany, the interior will still be made and fitted by the craftsmen in Crewe, featuring the same fine-quality materials as the range’s bigger models, and ensuring no visible components bear any resemblance to those used on its Volkswagen relations.

The MSB (Mid-Size Bentley) Models will start in the 150g price range. the engine in the GT coupe is supposed to be around 600 hp and 600 ft/lbs of torque. thats with a 6 litre W12 supercharger. thats pretty crazy. 6 speed auto (like in the 745 its a ZF) the other 2 cars besides the GT will be longer by 7.5 inches. the almighty bentley shares some things with the VW Phaeton such as AWD, 6AT, suspension, and basic enge (except its supercharged) but "insiders claim the suspension parts are not interchangeable and that final tuning ensures the coupe's performance and handling are distinctly different from the limousine like Phaeton's" (c&d) yeah so basically ill take one of each....color. if i had money to buy one of those i wouldnt have to decide between that and the ferrari b/c chances are i could afford the ferrari also so why bother saying ill take this bla bla over that bla bla. i do have to say, i'll need to see it in person before i fall in love with those headlights. o yeah and all that stuff up there is str8 from car and driver june 2002.
