Nav Systems
I have had factory installed Nav systems in all of my cars since the TSX. I love them and would not own a car without one. However, with the huge price reduction, ease of use and size of the portable ones I do not plan on optioning my next car with one unless it is an Acura product which are the best in the biz in my opinion. Does anyone feel the same way or will you always opt for factory installed NAV systems.
At this point, I wish my TSX had one. I hope to have one in my next car, but it depends on what car I get and how much money the option is. I don't like the portable ones because I don't want something sitting on my dash - I find that annoying.
I always regretted not getting the Navi in my CL. Now I have a TOMTOM portable Nav and I love it. Its easier to use, easily upgradeable and I can take it from car to car. Best part was it was only a little over $100
So I voted that NO my next car will not have factory Navi

I would have to say YES. The wife needs one so we bought a Garmin. They are really nice to have and in a lot of ways they are probably better than a factory installed one, but the next car I get, I will definately try to get one with navi.
I regret when I got the Pathfinder not getting the one that was a year older, with 20K miles only because that one had navi installed.

My wife has the portable garmin for her car and I have one on the pacifica and one in the Cayman. The Cayman's Nav is complex and just sucks out right while the Pacifica's is better but they prevent you from making changes while you drive and position it in the speedometer pod which makes it tough for the passenger to operate while you drive. Of all the systems the one in the TSX is the best i have ever used and it looks like it is only getting better.

with you. I like the BLING! factor of my Accord's nav screen (integration to other functions like climate and radio controls and all) but the Tom Tom is a GREAT unit. Had I known how great it was, I might have purchased the Accord without the OEM navi.....which certainly would have saved me a couple of grand.
I vote NO as well. Portable navi systems almost make OEM setups nearly impractical in the face of the cost differential.
I used to dismiss navigation systems as a superflouous expense and the extra $2000 to be a ripoff. However, since I won't ever buy a brand new car again, I can easily get a navigation equipped used car for no extra money.

I have always liked the integrated look, as the after market ones look like @$$, especially if the mount is screwed down onto the dash or anywhere else. A few people know how to give it a nice look, but most don't.
I voted "it depends", because I get my cars at auction. If getting non-navi lowers the price $1000 or more, I don't need it. If it's no or little cost, OK.
when I got the TSX my price range was high 20's-low 30'w and the TSX with navi came out to about 27+ so I said screw it and spent the extra coin on navi since I was under budget anyway. Now I will never get a car without it.
My damn cell phone does an excellent job of Navi just with Google Maps and the built in GPS. It even shows traffic. Can't beat that with a stick. If I can just get it to do voice prompts I'll be all set.
Ultimately I think the best of both worlds would be combining a mobile device with a factory screen. Maybe in 5 to 10 years factory screens will have a nav input and portables will have an output.
If the cost of the factory option would come down to $500 and be able to implement the functionality and ease of upgrading of a portable unit by simply tapping into the portable, I think everyone would win....

My TL has the Nav, but it's not a necessity, and I won't pay $1000+ hereafter for a Nav that isn't a touch-screen. I voted "depends," assuming prices drop or the Nav becomes standard. Otherwise, a $200 aftermarket Nav unit would be fine with me if I wanted one.
I voted no... but now that I think about it.... I really wish I had a factory navi... less clutter. I have a portable TomTom and it does fine, and I have to admit too... it's bee VERY handy here up in Vancouver with the rental car.
side note here: I read somewhere awhile back that said cars with factory navi my NOT necessarily have a better resale value because usually by the time it's time to sell the car... the factory navi is most likely outdated.

I have the touchscreen / voice activated navigation in my new camry and it's phenomenal. I just say the state, city, street name and number and it finds it for me. No more typing unless it's a crazy name. And no I'll never go w/out it.
On a side note those portable ones are the #1 stolen things now in cars, I prefer the manufacturers.

at the rate technology moves, a built in nav system will be totally antiquated long before the useful life of the car has ended. i could see built in nav systems bringing down the value of a used car at some point. Kinda like those used cars you see from 1995 that have built in cell phones. ugh. i keep a garmin nuvi in my glove box, no regrets on not getting the nav. but tht's not why i didn't get it. i didn't get the nav simply because it added an unsightly hump(imo) to the dash. yuk.
I have a Garmin nuvi 260, in my '01 CLS. I mounted the dashboard disc over the slide out tray and CD slot. Since the CD player usually gives me the error when i try to use it, and i have the blitzsafe hooked up i don't lose any functionality. It blocks nothing, sits in the perfect spot and looks about as OEM as possible...can't even see the cord.
If I were buying a NEW car it would depend, but most likely I would get one. In both our Acuras I love having the large screen, not having to take it out of the vehicle after every use, and the easy to use interface. I have a portable one in my truck, and I much prefer the ones in my parents cars. The portable ones have their benefits, but I like the fit and finish of the factory systems, and if I were already dropping a lot on a new car, I'd throw that option in.

I could care less to have the factory nav, I barely use a nav system, but even if I had the choice I would probably prefer a portable system, well, because it's portable. And the new ones are getting better and better, and smaller too, making it easy to take with you. On personal days I don't use the Nav much. For work, I use it all the time, but I use many different cars when doing deliveries, so the portable one really comes in handy for me..My wife's BMW has nav in it, I still prefer to use the portable one because her nav sucks in my opinion. Her lease is up in the summer, and we're still contemplating getting the next car with factory nav or not..

i voted yes.
my 05 has navi, and i don't regret it one bit.
whenever i buy another car, a factory navi won't be a high priority, but i would prefer it to a portable unit. i just prefer the integrated look, and i don't like the clutter of a portable one even if it's not on the dash or windshield.
but they both have their pros and cons. the ability to easily update a portable unit is what interests me the most. but cell phones now have maps and navigation too so i figure i'll just use that as well.

Last year verizon gave me one free month of their VZ Navigator on my phone and it was horrible at best.
Other than a dedicated weekend funster, my DDs have all had navi for four years. I do enough road trips that the extra expense and integrated nature of the devices are worth it to me.

Nav: $42,000-32%=$28,560
No Nav: $40,000-30%=$28,000
So the navigation system still has value, it just depreciated much faster than the rest of the car.
I like the built-in. Integration (voice/audio controls/bluetooth), theft resistance and long warranty are all nice to have. Plus, since portables are so cheap, why not both (we have a little Garmin, too)?

I've had factory nav on the 03 CL-S and the 04 TSX. My next car (most likely not an Acura) will almost certainly have factory nav as well, even if it's not as good as the Acura one. It's all about the integration for me.
How about if they cost $100? Is there anyone here that wouldn't get one? A lot of people downplay the usefulness, when it's the price they have a problem with. Of course price is a factor in anything, but don't tell me your reason for not getting one is because of possible minor increase in depreciation in 5 years.
the cost of adding nav to my 335 would have been a negligible difference in payments. same with most cars. like i said before i didn't like how the nav looked. i-drive wasn't getting rave reviews either.
saying cost is the only reason anyone doesn't get nav is oversimplifying things. also, portable nav systems are well, portable. don't underestimate how useful that can be.
i spent 46k on my 335i, it's not like i'm scraping pennies together to pay my mortgage and i'm far from poor...

and like you said before, at the pace technology is revolving portable GPSs will be even cheaper in the short run with better features... factory installed ones... well, it's pretty much going to be out dated
