My weekend at the Tail of the Dragon

I just wanted to share some pix. I was at "Wake the Dragon" this weekend with other members of S2KI, and I took my wife. We stayed at the Fontana Village Resort. The event was a boatload of fun and I drove the Dragon four times. I became more confident each time. Will definitely be back.

Looking up Fontana Rd. at the Poolside Cabanas

Looking down Fontana Rd.

Dinner Friday night, with S2000s in panorama

After dark at dinner Friday night

My two-year-old wanted to help Daddy wash the car upon our return this afternoon. I really missed him.

Great pics NB. Sounds like a lot of fun. I've always wanted to do it on a bike.

Thanks again for the pics.

He'll be three next month. He's at the 95th percentile for height. I expect him to top out well over six feet. Smart as a whip, too!

Thanks for sharing the pix. That looks like a great time being able to hang with fellow enthousiasts. I especially like the shot of the cookout with all the S2000s in the background. Awesome!

Nah, that's Ron A . Wrong moderator.

The great thing about S2000s though is that a lot of the owners ARE older, and since the prices are dropping through the floor on used ones, a LOT of youngsters are getting into them. It makes for a very eclectic mix of people at WTD.

I saw one older dude with a wing and a LOUD Invidia V1 exhaust on his S. ...and he wasn't the only one, either! He alone broke ALL my preconceived notions about what kind of people do stuff others consider "rice". Very nice guy, too, as was everyone there. They were shocked that a relatively young guy like me (40) was considering a Tanabe Medalion Touring (e.g. not loud, exhaust not huge).

As they say, it's about the relationships you build, not just the driving. I can hardly wait to go back.

The CTS-V would be less fun than the S2000 on the Dragon. There simply aren't enough straightaways to really open it up. It would really hustle in the curves, though, the magnetic ride control is awesome at controlling body roll and other unwanted movements.

It would probably do better on the nearby Hellbender 28, as there are some longer straightaways.

I wish my son was in the 95th percentile for height and weight. He's well underweight now (19th percentile) at 1.5 years old. Blah. I fucking hate being short.

I've been wanting to "ride the Dragon" for a while now. Looks like a blast and it's sooo close to me.

My Dad did it on his Ducati ST4s with a group that rode up from Alabama, group included: Dad's 2004 ST4s, a mix of Harleys and an early 90's BMW "adventure" bike...bags and all.

He then drove my Mom's '01 Miata on it while they were on vacation last year. Mom said the smile never left his face.

Great pictures! I've been wanting to do that since I heard about the Dragon a few years ago.

Did everyone behave themselves on the trip? I have a feeling with that many S2K's on the road, there would be some shenanigans.

None taken, I am what I am. Besides, Reuben is not everyone's taste, and I have the most eclectic, varied taste that I know. What's on my iPod would blow your mind. Next navi pix will be when I'm playing Led Zeppelin IV, my favorite of their albums for obvious reasons (and no, not because "Rock and Roll" was in the first CTS ads, though I DID like them more for that reason....)

None of our guys caused any trouble, not even at Deal's Gap, the motorcycle haven. However, someone in another group was driving with a suspended license and when he caught the attention of the LEOs, he took off FAST, around a LEO, and ended up wiping out on the Dragon. Compared to that, our group was well behaved. OT--who is that cutie in your avatar?

I didn't think you were all traveling in groups. I pictured a huge caravan of cars with some of them trying to show off their drifto skills. The LEO's probably see that kind of stuff all the time.

The girl in the avatar is Kato Rosa. A Japanese actress/model.

You should come with us when we do the Boston Mtn tours.....I swear you dont pass any sort of traffic for hours. The roads are breathtaking and well maintained.

<--- Refuses to attend any sort of Miata/MX5 function because the median age is 86....plus the s2k guys are better/faster drivers

PM me if your interested, and Ill keep you posted!

Monster Rollout on Hellbender 28 near the Fontana Village Resort. My wife was the videographer. Sorry for the lousy YouTube compression.

Now THAT is a long drive to get to as it's in Arkansas. Then again, the Dragon is eight hours' drive from Cleveland. The Dragon also is pretty crowded and full of LEO, so if the Boston Mountains routes are less crowded and less LEO'd it could be worth the effort.
