My First V-10 BMW M5 Drive
I thought you guys might be interested in some thoughts of my first of hopefully many drives in the '06 BMW M5, with it's 500bhp V-10.
The 7-speed SMG III is incredible, especially paired with the HUD. I tried a few different transmission configurations and found that the auto-mode is nice to have, though the paddle mounted shifting is much better on this automatically actuated manual shifter. If you buy the car, you MUST get the heads-up display, there's no question. It is so useful and intuitive that I never looked at the dash while driving. The power and performance is staggering, though it doesn't feel like it so much because of the solidness and "over engineering" of the vehicle. My guess is that at 120mph a passenger could easily sleep in the car on a decent road. You can compare your Acura to this at 60mph vs. a minivan. The vehicle is so capable that there's no feeling that the car might be stressed until an extreme rate of speed. Seeing cars ahead about 1/2 a mile to pass (prey), I simply downshifted a couple gears and was almost instantly upon them. In fact, at about 65, putting my foot down in 7th gear in 500 sport even brought relatively quick acceleration. It's a totally new feeling for me in driving, that I can travel to any place I can see with zero effort.
The finish of the vehicle inside is of course astounding. The real brushed aluminum felt a factor of 80% nicer than the cheap stuff. I really preferred the leather selected to the more expensive full leather. The one I sat in at at a dealership had full leather and seemed to seem to have the treatment old people apply on the top of their car in vinyal, only w/ leather on the dash. I was also impressed with the thigh-supporting seats, which were a surprise because this car doesn't have the higher-end seats. I suppose these are at least one step up from the standard 5 seats as it is an M5 afterall. A Cingular RAZR paired with the BMW Assist Bluetooth is quite nice. It seems to work very well from the remote side, with clear voice coming over the line.

To me at least, the aluminum felt only a factor of 70% nicer than the cheap stuff

wow. have i said this enough; if i had to choose only 1 car under 100k to be my daily driver, I think it'd be a BMW M5. How do you think it would handle the snow?

Though the M5 is incredibly hot
Is this your father's daily driver, or a weekend vehicle? How does he like it? I'm surprised there's actually cars that are not pre-sold around the nation. Kuni BMW in Portland had an M5 a couple weeks ago that wasn't spoken for...

I'm jealious with my RL. Of course my bitch at 120 mph says this minivan will have me in our waterbed at the same time and the extra slight vibrations is a $30k turn-on.
Still a great car, but it takes nerve to drive through traffic and cops over 100 mph for an hour. Do you have it? Anything that BMW agrees to build in Spartanburg, SC makes me question everything they build.

To the snow, you will need different tires (and possibly smaller wheels for the M5) to drive the M5 or a 5series sport in snow.

Nothing about the side seat side bolsters pushing inward as you make turns over .5 g's?
THAT's cool.
