Severe storms lash parts of southern Ontario
CTV.ca News Staff
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of southern Ontario, including Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph and areas immediately surrounding Toronto.
Forecasters warn these storms could produce a tornado, and radar has already detected some related activity.
These storms have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h and hail.
Buildings have reportedly been damaged and cars overturned near Kitchener.
Earlier, severe weather was reported in the London, Ont. region.
Police there reported seeing what seemed to be a tornado hit the area.
South of the border, a twister struck a town in south-central Wisconsin, levelling 15 homes and damaging 30 others.
A 54-year-old man apparently died of injuries sustained during the collapse of his home in Pleasant Springs, Wisconsin.
The U.S. National Weather Service was investigating reports of 18 possible tornadoes around the state.

Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for the GTA, saying that an approaching storm could pummel the area with winds of up to 90 km/h, large hail, and heavy rain.
"It's a pretty nasty cell," explained meterologist Jon Pacheco from AccuWeather.
“The tornado (weather) is to the north of Toronto, and the worst of it is probably going to stay north of the city. Pickering is being hit right now. Halton Hills, Mississauga and Oshawa are also being hit right now. Toronto won't get the worst of it. We won't be hit by the cell itself, just get edges of it.”
Staff at the Environment Canada headquarters in Dufferin St. near Steeles Ave. W. were told to seek shelter in the basement for half an hour this afternoon.
"There's never been a time when we've been asked...to seek shelter in all the years we've been here," said senior climatologist David Phillips, who has worked in the building since 1971.
"It was kind of exciting, but I couldn't help but think of the irony of it, my God, if a tornado hit our office the rest of Canada would laugh. There's almost a certain irony: this is where all the forecasts are made and the (storm line) was bearing down on us."
The Greater Toronto Airport Authority’s Web site lists 329 flights as delayed and 195 as cancelled. The airport is having trouble keeping up with the backlog, a spokesperson explained.
A tornado touched down earlier this afternoon near Fergus, the OPP reports.
Unsettled weather is expected to continue through late Saturday.
