MT: Fastest Around Laguna Seca
MT: Fastest Around Laguna Seca
So, Motortrend recently gathered up the "Top 10 Fastest Production Cars Motor Trend Has Lapped Around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca" for a comparison. Which was fastest? The answer might surprise you:

Perhaps I'm just a little behind on my Corvette knowledge, but I would have been less surprised had it been the ZR-1, not the Z-06. That being said, I am also surprised at how far behind the Porsche GT3 RS ended up finishing.
My next thought was the tires as an advantage (since I've seen that a few times in recent comparisons), but the 1st and 10th cars had the same Pilot Sport Cup tires.
Screw it, I'll just take the 12C. Close enough.

something just seems off here... maybe the driver they used, the car just suits him better. I mean the old track record was set at 1:33.92 of the 10' viper ACR. Was there any difference between an 08' and 10' viper acr?? If not then it kinda shows how off these results may be.
Either way its the new zr1 or the new viper taking the record. I think its the viper. I think the new viper beat out even the ACR viper at the nurburgring by quite some time. This is off of memory so i'm not exactly sure.

I'm definitely a Z06 fan. The fact it's actually, potentially within reach for someone like myself someday, that's unbelievable its faster than cars 3 or 4 times as much money or more, and it can be daily driven. I sooo want.
These times aren't all from the same day but from a record of their previous laps. Motor Trend did use the same driver though.
I believe the 10 ACR has different gearing and a slightly bigger rear wing compared to the 08/09 ACR, making the 10 even more suitable for track use. The 10 lapped the Nurburgring in 7.12.xx compared to the 08 which did it in 7.22.xx, which should explain the 10 lapping Laguna Seca about 1.2s faster than the 08.

I'm still shocked at the results. I thought that the R8 or GT-R would have faired better on LSMS. All this proves is that a car has the ability to be faster around Laguna Seca than another car. Some of those times are close enough to where the results could change on a different day and/or with a different driver.
For the purpose of bragging rights, I'd rather have the car that is fastest around the Nurburgring. It's much longer and more grueling, thus a better measurement of overall performance.

Good point. I'm still surprised, though, at the supremacy of the Z06 over that list.
