Yes that's right. After owning the Porsche for 5 months, I decided I want to sell it.

1st reason is that financially I should not have bought it from the first place as I used a credit line to pay for it. $40,000 @3.5% interest - so even though the monthly interest is low, who knows how long it will take me to pay the car off

2nd reason is that I am afraid of the maintenance of German cars (even though I still have 1.5 years of Porsche warranty left).

3rd reason is that I need to get rid of my car addiction and "grow up"

My choices now are in the used market of course and in the $15,000 range. They are all 4-door (have 2 kids) and have some fun factor in them

1. 2004-2006 Acura TL 6spd
2. 2005-2006 Subaru Legacy GT 5spd
3. 2007-2008 Honda Civic SI 4-door

Please discuss (without too much bashing)

996 (not gt2/3 and turbo)and 986 have ims issues. The rms seems to leak and the labor is expensive. The ims bearing can go at any time and most likely will grenade a $12-17,000 motor. There is an ln engineering ims bearing that is much more sturdy and better replacement.

the aos sometimes will go, but it's only a $100 or so part.

They are very reliable cars and very easy to work on(at least i think).

Beyond that, they are really reliable and can take a beating, that's what they are designed for.

Unless it's a C4S at least with decent mileage, I'd say he overpaid.

Count me as another vote for the Legacy over the TL. Both are great cars, but in different ways. I'd go for modability and AWD over luxury and technology.

Si is the funnest car stock and I love those black/red stitched suede seats... if you're going to mod, go with the LGT. Civic Si is smaller than either of them, but really it's plenty of room for 4 adults. TL is great all around though, best interior of the bunch.

Personally, I would get an LGT simply because it wouldn't stay stock

I'd get the TL. Just put snows on it for the winter and you're set.

If I'm not mistaken, porsche's are very reliable, more so than toyota(according to J.D power). They are usually the top of the J.D power survey, at least the last few times I saw it. Dunno about 02 though.

Maintenance costs will be high though. So i guess that would be more of a reason.

As for cars to look at, I would maybe lean toward the subie and tl. Drive both and see how you like it. Si, I dont think competes with those two cars.

Swapping cars is an addiction. I'm 21 and I've had 3 cars of my own since I was 16. No matter how much money I pour into my car, I always want something new.

You need to pick something and stick with it.

They are fairly reliable cars which is why they're so popular. As dallison mentioned, some do have RMS issues, but other then that they are fairly stout. Maintenance will be higher then any of the alternative cars listed, but you gotta pay to play.

Is the Porsche a weekend car? If so, definitely keep it. If not, keep it and get a beater as a commuter. There's no way I'd get rid of the Porsche for any of the cars listed...

Glossary for non-Porsche fanatics:

RMS - Rear main seal (crankshaft)
IMS - Intermediate shaft (camshaft drive)

Porsche now has a good procedure to check for RMS issues and a much improved seal. The IMS problem is actually a bad bearing design, which has seen several updates from Porsche with mixed success. The early M96 engined cars had more instances of both these problems (97-01 Boxster, 99-01 911). LN engineering does seem to have the best fixes for these issues.

These cars are easy enough to work on for everything you can get to......

I really want to sell the 911 because it is not wise to put $40,000 on a credit line that you don't know when it will be paid off

$15,000 on the credit line is definitely way more manageable

you can be a very mature individual and take care of family business while still owning a car you desire.

No need to grow out of car addiction. Just make sure to keep a level head and not get carried away by that addiction.

The 911 was a toy correct? IMO a toy should be paid in full before you even consider getting one. Good luck with whatever you decide and don't give up on getting another one someday.

With 2 kids you definitely need a different daily driver. TL if you want a nice interior. Legacy if you want 4wd. Both will be good for dd.

Actually the 911 is a very nice dd - my kids are 7&5 so they fit perfectly in the back seats - I even went to Costco and had to fit all these boxes in the car - it was quite an adventure - selling it is more for financial and mental wisdom - that's all

basically it's a fight right now between passion and wisdom

your kids are not going to be 7 and 5 forever. they will grow up and not be able to fit back there. you could sell the 911 in like five years when they are older if you want.


also i think its pretty cool to be driven to school in a 911...just sayin...
