MOVED: thinking about selling/trading in

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ive had the cl-s for about a year and a half now, ive loved it hated it and everything in between.

its an auto 01 silver/black navi and 70k miles. about to have to put another tranny in it for the second time since ive owned it.

looking for a few opinions on some cars im looking at

chrysler 300c srt-8 (a bit on the expensive side)
chrysler crossfire srt-6 (really starting to grow on me)
infiniti g35 coupe (love them, but seems like every1 and their grandmother has one)

i really like cars that you dont see too often, party why i got a cl. i think thats why the crossfire is looking like it might be the one.

Mitsubishi EVO IX or IX MR (i've heard a few negative things on the IX MR's but worth putting it out there)

i would go for G35 out of those options...there's a good reason why they are popular...I'm actually looking to get into my second one! The tranny issues really turn off the experience...I feel for ya as I'm sure many members here do...

hhmm, if you could swing price of the 300c SRT, that would be my pick. That's a pretty hot ride

Otherwise a G35 would be a great choice... And don't worry about everyone and their grandma having one. Spend and few $$ on it and make it your own. Rims, drop, etc...

out of the factory 1/4 mile times is the only other thing that really pushes me away from the g35.

everything else is low 13's and the g35 is low 14's.

at the Crossfire.

I'd say G35, 350Z or Evo. Since your only 18. Evo FTW.

ROFL ... I love that the list has a $45k SRT-8 and a Crossfire you can probably get for under $30k.

like som1 said i am only 18. but i do work 2 jobs, a full time 4 days a week (10 hour shifts but about 40k/yr) and a part time job to make some extra money. and being 18 i still live at home. leaving me plenty of money to get the car i want.

if you're doin it on your own while at home, mad props and respect to you! if no G35, have you considered pickingup a used M3? with the new one coming out the prices are ure to be more reasonable in that range and I think the last gen M3 looks WAY better than the new one...even if it has a v8...

or you could just trade your TL in and get a SLK55...

i was looking at some E46 M3's and the S4 but ive kind of moved on from those, too many of them, im not really into the big names like BMW, Benz , Corvette. i like things that are kind of low key. and i couldnt agree with you more on the looks of the E46 compared to the new one. all the new Bimmers are ugly IMO

Not to jack the thread but, I cannot begin to imagine the insurance premiums for an 18 y/o on ANY of those vehicles. The Evo insurance rating must make it a premium nightmare. LINK

i agree...bangled bimmers blow...E46 gen FTW!!! If i were to get another bimmer it would only be the last gen of them at this point. Bangle turned me off of bimmers completely. Although I have to give the 335i coupe props for engineering...

BMW M3 05 would cost me roughly 6800 if i paid it biannually or 7500 monthly when i was looking. just for me on my own policy. yea a bit extreme but i'm insured on a 86 toyota pickup truck haha. my dad has the IS insured in his name but my name on the note, keeps insurance low.

Depends how much money you can spend. But why not German cars, they rank a better than Pontiacs and Chrslyer. I saw BMW 3/m series or Audi A/S4.

yet you want a G35?! That is the trendiest car on the face of earth, with an "Infiniti" tag backing it up. How doesn't it have a big name?

Either way, I say you wait for the 135i like me

Why waste the money on a car like that now? You're in a perfect situation to put some money away now to set yourself up for some better things in the future. Why spend that money on a car (a depreciating asset)? Are you going to pick up honeys in your ride and bring them back to your parents house? You seem like a hard worker... don't let it go to waste.

Car rich and house poor FTL. Buy a used G35 for somewhere in the low 20's, keep those insurance premiums down by staying away from boy racers and V8's, and just save your money for something useful. Then, when you're a little older you'll have your own place, and you'll be making better money, you can buy whatever car you want.

Hm if you are going to get the new G37 coupe wait a year. It is an awesome car I am sure but first year cars normally arent a great idea.

I agree with JuniorBean though about saving some money and getting the used G35. I am sure you can find a good deal on one if you wait around. I mean there isnt any rush you can just keep driving around your CL till you find something.

And why aren't you in school? Not to butt in on your business, but if you aren't going to school, you should be. Instead of 2 full time jobs and part time making 40k a year, several years down the road, who knows, you could potentially be making 80k+ a year with just 1 full time job. Just my

Anyway, it really depends on what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure everyone here is making a recommendation on what THEY want, or what they think they would get if they were you, not the best recommendation for YOU. You need to be more specific on what you're looking for in a car.

Bang for your buck, prestige, straight-line performance, handling, value, interior, etc.

So far, you want something low-key and different. Legacy GT, perhaps? Hardly ever see one on the road, but good luck finding a used one too. None of the dealers ever have them on lots, they sell quickly and no one trades them in. Its turbocharged, same block as the STi, just a smaller turbo, intercooler and intake runners so it has potential. Then again like I said earlier... its what I'm looking for, something low-key, with moddability in mind.

Only recommendation I have for you is to test drive all the vehicles you're looking at, then think long about it before you make any decisions.

ok, cant sleep. so heres the reply:

the reasoning for all this work and why i want to get "a car like that" now is because ive always loved cars that why im working as hard as i am. and putting money away is already under way. ive been putting away close to a grand every month for the past year if not a little more. and i plan to keep on putting money away, with a big down payment and a trade in to keep my monthly payments low i should still be putting away the same amount that i am now each month.

the "honeys" is not why im getting a new car either. exactly why i dont want a vette or bimmer. i have a steady relationship. my girlfriend is almost 20 now and is going to be getting her own place in a month or 2.

the insurance has always been a problem it wasnt cheap at 16 for a cl type s so i guess im already used to paying out the wazoo for that.

well, as for school got my G.E.D. at 15 to start working so i could get a car. ive always loved cars and couldnt see myself driving somthing i didnt want to be in. i was never fond of school and figured id get a jump on some work. you may have misread my post about work.
i work 1 full time job 4 days a week which brings in 40k/yr and a part time that i make around 15k/yr. i do work a lot and dont get me wrong, college isnt completly out of the question im just too busy with work right now. i dont plan on doing this for the rest of my life just trying to make some money.

and this poll isnt going to make up my mind on what i get, its basically just to get some input from other people.

glad someone remembered that fiasco...lol...not a way to open a thread...but yeah man...G35 seems to be the consensus here. You can find a slightly older one for a good price, it's fast, looks good, totally customizable, and gets respect from a diverse crowd. On top of that if you get a stick, it won't be a glass tranny a la our CL's/TL's...

Not to go completely off-topic here, but really, that still doesn't make sense. You want to trade in your car and put a large down payment on a depreciating asset??? You want to work 2 jobs just for a car? Wouldn't it make more sense to just put MORE money away every month, possibly invest it to get some better returns so it can MAKE you money instead of costing you money?

Trust me, I was the same way as you. I've always loved cars. I always had pretty good cars when I was young. Then I wised up a few years back and kept my TL-S instead of getting an M3 (my wife also had something to do with that ). I mean, it was just my wife and I and we had 4 cars between us. I sold two of them off and instead, the money went into real estate and eventually helped put us where we are now. Wouldn't you rather have a nice house, nice things AND nice cars verses just nice cars? My wife had a 1994 Toyota Camry from 1997 until this past spring when it died with 200k miles. That was her car for almost 10 years. Sure we could have bought her other cars over the years, but she kept that until things settled for us and last summer we bought her a new A4. We put the money where it needed to go at the time while we were building everything up... and now we can pretty much buy her any car (within reason) she wants. It's much better to live that way then for a car.

Just put this out there for your reference, but my wife was 22 when we began construction on our first home. So we never had to live in an apartment (except for a few months while we were waiting for construction to end) and our first place was new construction. Wouldn't you and her rather be building a home in 2 years then living in an apartment with a nice car in your assigned spot? We were your exact ages when we had just started saving (I was 20, she was 18). So decisions like this can start to shape your future. Just saying....

Again, you are definitely a hard worker... but whether or not you liked school... getting your GED at 15 just so you can start buying cars likely will come back to bite you in the ass later on. Sure making $40k at 18 is nice, regardless of how you're doing it (1 job, 2 jobs, and so on), but how nice is it going to be when you're making the same amount or just a little bit more 10 years from now? Not so cool. Wouldn't you want to make double the money and only have to work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day (at the most)?

I know you're just looking for car advise and honestly, I wouldn't be replying if it didn't seem like you had a good head on your shoulders and a good work ethic... but it just bothers me when teenagers put it all to waste for a car (and yes, I realize this is an automotive forum, and yes, I did the same thing but caught myself before more money was wasted). Seriously bro... get a nice used car, drive it into the ground put your money into something more valuable like your own house, and set yourself and girlfriend up for a profitable future.

But, as mentioned in my first reply.... I vote the G35 (used), so that is what I voted for. . So there, now I'm back on-topic

smart man that junior bean...in all honesty I think his advice is the best. But if you decide to go ahead with a car, I'm still on the G35...

just to kind of clear a little bit of confusion on saving money by getting a g35, all of them are low to mid 20's except for the srt-8.

and juniorbean thanks for the advise. i get a lot of greif from people i know for working so much. and im not going to be keeping the cl and having multiple cars and no money. im just looking to move on from the cl and not downgrade. which is tough because the cl is a solid car.

i can see exactly where your coming from with not getting a car and getting a house. my girlfriend works a lot less than i do but drives a hyundai, and shes the one getting an apartment not me. but she loves he little 5 speed accent, i just couldnt live with myself driving somthing i didnt want.

i just dont like the tail lights. but thats pretty minor, other than that i think its an overall nice looking car that people just dislike because its a chrysler. (its actually 80% clk320)

my mind isn't set, i just feel people dont pay as much respect to that car as it deserves.
