Motorcycle guys!!

I wanted to get a motorcycle so I contacted my insurance agent. Progressive quoted me just under $3,000 a year for an '06 GSX-R600. Geico quoted me like 4500 bucks a year.

This is with a clean record, 25 years old. These figures are ridiculous, considering I'm paying a third of the Progressivie quote for full coverage on my TL-S.

What's a good motorcycle insurance company that can offer me an affordable rate? $3,000-4,500 a year is just insane.

mcgraw is super cheap. or try bike-line.com

these companies are super slow and their services aren't highly regarded.

if possible, transfer your auto insurance over to state farm. they will consider your bike as a secondary recreational vehicle, which is substantially cheaper.

or buy a kawi ex250

I went w/ progressive, cause it doesn't seem like a lot of companies are over here, and for some reason my car insurance company wouldn't insure a bike UNDER 251cc.

Full coverage on my ex250 would've been like $1500/year, which is what I paid for the damn bike. I had no choice but to basically get liability which is still costing me like $400/year.

Back when I was a sportrider, I had a Honda CBR 900RR and paid $400 a year and this was around 1997-2000 or so. As the other poster noted, I have State Farm and they considered it a secondary vehicle which was only going to be driven 4 months out of the year.

$3K for insurance is insane, and I personally wouldn't pay it. If that's how much it would be at any insurance company, I just wouldn't ride.

Oh, I know. I'm not even considering paying that much. They must be out of their mind if they think I'm actually going to pay that. I'd rather get a second car! My auto insurance is pretty cheap right now.

I guess I'll check with State Farm, but I'm not getting my hopes up. When I moved down here and was looking for auto insurance, SF quoted me twice the premium that AAA offered.

I'll also check into McGraw and bike-line.com. Thanks for the tip.

Try Foremost. They specialize in motorcycles. The shop i go to has a lady who handles insurance and I bought my policies at the bike shop. Ok, so I'm old and have around 40 years riding experiance so I'm going to be lower, but both my 650cc bikes are $180 per year total. The 2000 XR650R has liability only, and the 2007 SV650 has full coverage. If you can't find them at a bike shop, I only have their claim # 800-527-3907.

bike-line quoted me an insane premium at over 6k dollars. I didn't even save it or print it. I just closed the window.

McGraw was a little better than Progressive but not by much. And what is "Guest Liability"? Only McGraw charges for this, from what I've seen so far.

State Farm... Back when I bought my new 2003 Yamaha R6, full coverage was $280 a year. State Farm doesn't "black list bikes" they go by the engine size. My 1988 NX650 (Honda dirt bike) cost more than my R6 did because it was a "bigger" bike.

Wow...

My Harley is like $20 a month using Statefarm. So $240 total a year! And it's insured for $28k! And it's 1450cc

I'm 30 years old and have the following insured with Statefarm for comparison purposes... (not 100% sure what all discounts apply; someone might know)

Homeowners (house)
Acura TL 2005
Jeep
19' Boat /w150hp engine
2006 Harley Softail Deluxe

My total payment a month is $140 (which doesn't include homeowners as it's tacked into my mortgage payments). Including homeowners my total payment would be around $200 a month.

I pay $75 a year to insure my 82 yamaha maxim 750
There is something to be said for older bikes that you don't feel bad only carrying liability on.

Is this your first bike? If so its way too powerful for you, and the insurance company know it. Full coverage on any sportbike is going to cost you some money, cause the chance of you killing yourself is alot higher then other bikes.

Good luck and keep the shiny side up!

Is this your first bike?

If so, that's part of reason you're getting these ridiculous quotes. The other reason would be that the bike is way too powerful for a first bike.

If not... then just take everyone's advice and call State Farm already

I have my cars through State Farm and have had bikes with them. Their best rate on quote on my SV650 was $380 per year. Try Foremost...
