For the world's carmakers, the 3-series will probably remain the segment's benchmark for years to come, although in the marketplace the G37S should gain significant ground. If price were no factor, the 335i would certainly emerge as the best example of the breed based on its additional level of polish and poise. But for many, the nearly 30% difference in price will be worth a small sacrifice in refinement.

I have to agree with you, dollar for dollar Infiniti is killing it. My only gripe, which they will probably answer soon seeing that they really seem to listen to their customers, is an upgraded interior option, and I don't mean rosewood trim. Even Acura has a premium leather option on the TL now, a similar luxury package would really put them in a new league, cooled seats, premium leather, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, etc... Maybe even a real performance package consisting of an upgraded engine.

I hate it when mags set up these comparisons to get an obvious result. The G37 should be compared with the 328 because they are closer in price.
Put the shoe on the other foot and its like comparing the 335i to a M3. What's the point? More money->better stuff.

real leather wears faster than synthetics.... on the Bmw forums a lot of people with real leather seats complain of it wearing out/fading/cracking within the first 15k also whereas the people with leatherette dont have those problems

That's Acura's problem in a nutshell. Until they develop Tier 1 leatherette, they will always be also-rans.

Although, depending what you are after some may choose the 328i over the G35. The 328i has the same refinement that the article mentions. Only thing lacking in comparison is power, which we know isnt everything.

When i was shopping those two cars gave me sleepless nights. I couldnt figure out which one i liked better. They both impressed me in their own ways.

I would love to see a comparison between the G37X and the 335xi. I understand that the 335xi is quite different from the 335i, in terms of handling and performance.
To me, the Infiniti G37 is a better choice also because of its superior reliability.

Edmunds prefered the 6psd SHAWD system to everything else on the market so far in the last preview they put out.
3.7 offers better off turbo torque something displacement will always favor, regardless of how little turbo lag is claimed to exist. Point is you have NA 3.0 power before 2000rpm, much like us SC guys only realize full boost ~2800rpm and for sure 3000 and until then its partial boost as were waiting to spin the blower quick enough.. hey its only a 1L blower.
The new 370Z seems to be trapping around 105mph which is great so I guess the G37S would be what? ~104mph perhaps 103.5.

Dont forget the Acura TL 6psd 3.7 SH-AWD

335i makes its peak torque at 1400rpms.

If I were in the market I would go with the G. I just cannot get pass the dash appointments in the 3 Series. It looks dated and much too plain for a $40K car, let alone a $50K one.
I think the G looks better too.

You bring up a good point, not that I would say power is overrated, however, to the average consumer a G37 or 335i is WAY more power then they should have. When you compare a G vs. a 328i it makes the bimmer seem slow, when in reality, it is faster then most cars, not saying you want to run stoplights with a muscle car, but I believe a 328i runs a mid 14 second quarter mile, far from what I would call a "slow" car.

BMW 335i > Infiniti G37 >>>>>>>>>>>> BMW 328i to me.
Overall I prefer the Infiniti interior, but I do love how BMW lets you choose a variety of different leather/trim combinations.
Infiniti needs to offer Brown leather and Piano Black interior trim! I think both of those are insanely nice.

Yeah it says that.. but im not quite sure about that, although its been a while since ive been in a 335, found this dyno however doesnt really clarify anything before 2K but still interesting Edmunds is geting up there:

Isn't it?? haha
That one is a little better but same point where your going to feel the lag a bit, it wouldn't disuade me from enjoying one at the least bit, but still makes me wonder what a larger displacement V8 like a LS2 could do in terms of power off idle, and overall power/value.

Its generally because the sports car guys who do dyno testing aren't interested in what happens below 3000RPM in a sports car. Here's a GT-R & 911 Turbo dyno for comparison:
Like the G (and the TL for that matter), the torque peaks in the sports car RPM range and gradually tapers off while the HP peaks broadly below the redline. And this is how a sports car should behave regardless of the actual HP: it all begins with the engine buzzing past 4000RPM and pulling strongly up to a high, sweet singing redline.
The 335i will feel likes its running out of breath in sports car RPM range because its basically a street light queen better off with the Camaro/Mustangs racing down Main Street.
Of the G&3's, my vote for a sports car experience would be:
M3 > G37 > 328i > G35 > 335i.
