me vs. sl55 amg

I was just on a beer run and as I was pulling out of the grocery store parking lot a black sl55 amg went by with the engine screaming... I pulled out and got behind him in the left turn lane at the light. We went through the intersection slowly, then he opened it up as soon as he was straightened out. I was about 15 feet off his ass, and remained the exact same distance up to around 75 mph when he killed it. I kept waiting for him to take off and leave me but it didn't happen....

Now what I'm wondering is...why did this happen? He was trying, I'm sure of that, so he must have messed up. How can you screw up once you have a rolling start...you just floor it right? Maybe he hit second too early? Whats the gearing like on an sl?

Or, and I might be way out of line, but is an s2k comparable to an sl55 in a 10-75 mph race? In the few races I've run, I always lose ground off the line but make it up very quickly once I get the RPM's up. The s2000 0-60 is usually listed around 5.8 (vs. 4.5 on the 55amg), but I think that is severely affected by the sluggish launch.

Ok now that the adreneline is out of my system and I'm thinking rationally, it has to be driver error. I didn't just hang with a 465hp supercharged benz in my na 2 liter s2k unless he dun fucked up.

btw last week I got beat by a car that I guarantee was worth less than one of the tires on this mb.

3 possibilities:

1) he sux and can't drive

2) it was an SL500 with SL55 badging and wheels etc

3) the supercharger broke

didn't think so

made me feel good though.

must have been 1... pretty sure it was an amg, and I can't see the sc breaking on a brand new mercedes.

Well you can't trust MBs reliability , but how can it be driver error though? Aren't all SL55 AMGs Automatics? Floor it and go right?

^ thats my question.

auto or not, the race was started at around 10mph.... all he had to do was floor it.

has anyone heard the s/c kick in on one of these? how loud is it? I never heard it...but my car is loud so I figured thats why.

when does it kick in?

The cars have almost no discernible lag..... it's pretty much stomp on the gas and you're gone. They are as fast (or faster) than 996 Turbos. You're right, I don't know how someone could drive it "wrong", in a straight line...

nevertheless, I'm glad you got to keep up with one

I'll take it either way.

Too bad I didn't have a hot chick to impress in the car with me. I think I shook up my guinness too.

the SL55 is as fast, or faster than 996 Turbo..... the SL will do 12.4-12.7 @ 114-117 mph pretty much all day, while the 996 Turbo will do 12.3-12.8 @ 111-116 or so, pretty much all day. So it's not a big difference, but because the SL is auto, it's easier to duplicate great times with it. The 996 Turbo will suffer from heat soak after repeated stress, just because the turbos get so damn hot - causing the trap speeds to go down considerably.

my girl has a SL55 amg, and they are fast. either this guy was messing with you or he was scared/cant drive. the power is pretty constant, and you hear more raw engine noise and exhaust than supercharger whine.
he also could have turned the corner and accelerated in 3rd, or second depending how slow he made the turn, that could have been a reason too

Couple things:
- Like others have said, he either wasn't getting on it or he can't drive
- Your S2000 has 400hp and Honda never alerted you to this

On the SL55/911TT talk, it depends on the drivers and/or launch. If one car gets the lead off the line, it won't give it up until the motors shut down. I've raced 3-4 different 911TT in my dads car and that is usually the result. (From a roll or stop) It would certainly lose to a GT2 or Turbo S though.

I'm a really good driver though, so I can probably squeeze 300+ hp out of the s2k, even though its only rated at 240.

Nice

I must have the same driving skill then. Even though its an automatic, I can get 400hp and 675ft./lb out of the Tahoe when I need to.
