If its completely flat I'll only use the parking brake, any kind of incline/decline I leave it in first. There arent very many steep hills around me, and even if the parking brake fails and the car is in first pointed downhill, it would stop it from rolling. It takes ALOT of momentum to get the engine to turn over while in gear.


And some automatics it is a MUST to use the parking brake. My Taurus had rear drums and the praking brake was engineered to adjust the shoes I believe. The parking brake is one of those things that you should def use more often than not, because if you dont it will freeze/corrode and you wont have it at all.

It seemed to me like it was pretty common practice in Italy, but I don't recall seeing it in France though.

Obviously, it doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.
