My brother's GTI got hit by a rock on the windshield. He told me there's a 10cm (3-5 in) crack, and claims he knows for a fact that a repair shop can stop it from growing with a little fix on the end of the crack. Is this true?

I told him it was best to replace the windshield. I read somewhere the insurance company will pick up the cost in full. Not sure if AAA will do so, however. The location of the damage is on the lower right side of the windshield.
