Looks like the Evo VII ain't coming afterall...
From Edmund's review of the 2002 Lancer:
"We're sure that the enthusiasts reading this are wondering about the Lancer Evolution VII, seen at the 2001 New York International Auto Show. Mitsubishi also displayed it at this Lancer press introduction. But the short answer is that no, this turbocharged, all-wheel-drive car will not be offered for the U.S. market anytime soon. We assume the reason is that Mitsu is not exactly flush with cash now (even though its U.S. sales rose 65 percent in the last two years), and it wouldn't make sense to spend huge money on an ultra-low-production (and probably non-profitable) image car. If Subaru does well with its 2002 Impreza WRX, however, you can bet Mitsubishi will feel the pressure to import the Evo.

I wouldn't bet much money on Edmunds data. How can they (Mitsu) not, WRXs are all backordered, and Subaru is already planning to bring over the WRX STI which will promise to be a screamer!!

Subaru has a couple of things working for them though. Since the rest of it's line-up has been selling well they could take a chance with a de-tuned WRX to test the waters. And since the WRX doesn't really have anything which is in the same sort of new turbo AWD pocket rocket genre to go up against. Mitsubishi is in trouble enough with the recall/defects cover-up problem. I'm not sure if they can roll the dice like Subaru.

One thing about the WRX/WRX STi/Evo VII that you guys are missing is that they are all front-heavy. Like the S4, their engines sit in front of the front axle. They are understeerers. And w/AWD, you can't finesse the throttle to slip the rear a little. The car understeers until you force all four tires to break free, then you get back on the gas and powerdrift.
Very different driving characteristics than the M3. I personally would take the M3 (yeah, like I could afford it. ), New Z, or the RX-8 (which is something I'm realistically considering, pending how the RX-8 will actually turn out by the time it makes it here to the States.)
