Looking for new SUV

My family is about to get larger and we are looking for something bigger than my RDX. I haven't been on any test drives yet but I think that I have narrowed my search down. I'm considering the Pilot and the Outlook. I haven't seen much other than the transmission problems for the Outlook. I'm still open to other vehicles. Any other suggestions?

Brother has a new CX-9 - very nice SUV. Smooth, rides and handles great, quiet inside and lots of space inside. Friend recently bought a Traverse. The Traverse impressed me the most. Great SUV. Solid structure, very quiet, good power, interior is well put together and even more space inside. Plus you should be able to get a good deal on either one.

I was just riding around in the new Pilot for a couple of days and I have to say I'm impressed. It's very roomy inside and the ride is a great improvement from the old generation.

^^ but, minivans are a hard sell to people who are inclined towards SUVs....that is until they actually own one.

+1 I love my Odyssey as well.

But you mentioned you were looking for an SUV so my vote would go to an MDX Sport or Mazda CX-9.

I love the Ody, but if minivans really arent your thing then I love the new Pilot as well. Last gen Pilot, not so much.

Outlook is look imo, too. But I have gone over the new pilot with a fine tooth comb and its a great vehicle.

I am looking into a Pilot/Acadia/Highlander come spring. I was thinking you could probably get a bigger discount on the Acadia.

Going from RDX to Pilot...is like going from one ugly girl to another.
No Thanks.

Out of those two...go Outlook.

The smarter move is an Ody.

I am in the same boat as the OP. My wife and I are looking at one too. You might want to stay away from the Acadia. Check KBB reviews from the editor and the people that own them. A lot have complained about transmissions going out. Some go out before a few thousand miles! I went and looked at the Pilot last week and it looks great! Haven't looked at the Outlook yet. However, it is a GM, so you might want to check KBB for reviews. They may have transmission problems too.

Acadia = Outlook = Enclave = Traverse (Although Traverse is the newest of the 4 so it may have the bugs worked out)

My wife doesn't really want an Ody. We have friends that have one so we have spent alot of time in it. I wouldn't mind a MDX but it's way out of our price range. I'm still trying to convince her that we need something larger. Wives!!!

That tranmission problem was on 07 GMs.

Lexus Dealers are whoring out 09 RX's right now. New rigs that are 42K are going for 32-35 easily, might want to take a look at them....

How many kids do you have that you need a new car? Maybe your RDX is fine?

i always felt the RDX to be really small, the RX has more room in it.

i say go for an MDX, the new Highlanders are nice and even the new Pilot but i don't like the exterior to much.

That's my wife's thought too. We are having our second. Right now we have a husky too. We have to get creative with packing for weekend trips and that's without the dog. It's probably doable with the RDX. That's why I not in that much of a rush.

I read somewhere on internet Acura is making a new SUV, and it will be bigger then MDX is this true? but i understand its the price range.

My friend has Toyota Rav4 V6 (sport) AWD but maybe its too small compare to RDX...

Right now maybe a time to look at couple year old X5 or ML? because after RDX you wouldn't want something with less of technology level. If not German than Japanese. I wouldn't get anything from GM right now.

Mazda has that CX-9 but i believe its FORD's platform on it I'm not too sure.

Other candidates (budget I'm guessing falls into these choices)

-VOLVO XC90
-Volkswagen Taureg (VERY NICE ONE, FRIEND's FRIEND HAS ONE)
-Toyota 4 Runner
-Nissan Pathfinder
-Jeep Grand Cherokee

GOOD LUCK MAN

Yeah, I'd much rather have a Pontiac Aztec in my driveway over a Honda Odyssey.

don't even get me started with the minivan insults.

Not my cup of tea, but...

The Toureg looks beautiful inside, but the V6 is underpowered. Look for one that is certified used. Then you'll be OK. Same with the Volvo XC90. If not, then the CX-9 and MDX should be the ones.

I had a Volvo V70 wagon for 5 years, and 3 kids. I didn't have a problem with space. What is up with women wanting an SUV? Status? Sitting high in a vehicle? Then when gas hits $4.00 again, the moaning will start... And in the northern US, even if it is a 4WD/AWD vehicle, the high center of gravity is tougher to handle in a bad spot. Unless she knows how to handle that type of vehicle.

Glad my wife is smart enough to realize a minivan is the right vehicle to have (great mileage 4 cylinder Odyssey, and more than enough room). I like standing on my soapbox bemoaning the SUV.

Waiting for the flamewar.

Maybe..... but for now I will keep my balls intact and continue to drive my Navigator.

To me..... you buy a mini van when you only care about functionality and no longer style. "Stylish" and mini van can't even be used in the same sentence.

I would much rather pay the extra few dollars to fuel up my SUV and have a vehicle I can be proud to drive.

Exactly. When you grow up and have kids, functionality takes precedence over everything else.

And I hope you realize what a tool you sound like.

My point is that you can have the best of both worlds in an SUV and have a nicer vehicle doing so.

Absolutely no reason to get defensive.... we all have our own opinion and thats thats why they make more than one kind of car.

No reason to get defensive? Didn't you just suggest you can't be proud to drive a minivan and have no balls if you do?

Name one way in which as SUV is more practical than a minivan.

SUV's are not nearly as practical as a minivan. The sooner people start realizing or should I say admitting that the sooner I'll get less defensive. But I realize not everyone needs or wants the practicality or space so SUV's are also a good choice.

I'm not here to suggest anyone buy a minivan. I could care less. But your first and second posts were just plain dumb and needed to be addressed.

sorry, but i can't agree with you at all.

i love SUVs and am not a fan of minivans, but there are no SUVs that are as functional and practical as a minivan. sure, large SUVs can fit many people now. but when it comes to the ease of loading and unloading childseats, ease for children/parents to get in and out while practically standing, SUVs are nowhere close.

and at no longer caring about style and having a nicer vehicle if you own an SUV.

1) grow up
2) style is subjective
3) a "nicer" vehicle is subjective.

Funny how different people's perceptions are. When I see someone in a Navigator I think, he must have a small dick. I'd be ashamed to drive one of those.

Not saying its wrong to each his own, just being honest.

If the OP wants an SUV, fine. I hope he finds a good reliable one. It's just funny how some people literally scream about how "practical their SUV" is, when it has less room and is less practical than a minivan or a wagon.

Now, the wagon can be one sporty SOB (Audi RS4 or RS6, or the Volvo V70R come to mind), and they are practical. IMO
