Lifespan of a timing belt?

Lifespan of a timing belt?

Quick ques my father asked of me and I am not too sure. His LHS is at 147,000mi and he had it rplaced back when it had about 90k. He wants to know what the avg. lifespan on a replacement timing belt is? Anyone know?

He wants to know if he should change it again soon.

Modern timing belts.. anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Often they'll go even longer but it depends upon many factors such as wear/tear, ozone, humidity etc. Its not worth taking a chance on it.

The owner's manual for my Civic says 60K. I think it's the same for the Accord in my family.

If he lives in a harsh climate, I wouldn't go any more than 60k miles. But don't change it earlier than that or you're wasting money, unless it's cracked or has something wrong with it. He's due for a change.

The timing belt just went last week on my TL-S. The car only has 32k miles. My car seems to go against every single conventional idea of part length with everything, from brakes to tires to timing belts.

Does warranty cover that?

I plan to do it every 50k miles. Audi says 60k but im modded so ill do it sooner.

It's 60k miles in severe conditions. If you drive your car 5 months in the snow, that's considered severe conditions. I just learned that not that long ago. He might have gotten lucky and it lasted longer. They usually do. But it's always nice to be on the safe side if you can afford it. I would rather pay a little bit more to be on the safe side than pay for new valves and shit (plus labour $$$$$!). Think about it, over the life of the car, you'll probably only replace the T-belt 3 times. So what if you've saved yourself one replacement by gambling that it will last. I'd rather pay the extra for peace of mind.

i'd change it. I'm doing my head and cam swap on my Trans Am this winter and plan on doing an LS2 timing chain and sprockets.
