Left Turn on Red

We all (hopefully) know about right turn on red after stopping but it strikes me that many people don't know that in certain circumstances, you can make left turns on red as well, usually only from a one-way onto another one-way.

Left turn on red under any circumstances is PROHIBITED in:

Connecticut
Missouri
New Hampshire
New Jersey
North Carolina
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Washington D.C.

Some states permit a left turn on red from a two way onto a one way. They are:

Alaska (EXCEPT on red left arrow)
Idaho (EXCEPT on red left arrow)
Michigan (OK on red left arrow)
Oregon (OK on red left arrow)
Washington (OK on red left arrow)

Curious? Full graph of allowed turns on red for the USA & Canada

also, cities could override these rules. ex. no right on red in all NYC boroughs.

here we just have signs that are like a couple paragraphs long that say

NO LEFT TURN ON RED
between 7am and 9am
and 4pm and 6pm,
except from left lane
after stop
except with green arrow
yield from right lane

or something like that. I have no time to read what they're talking about

Are you in Atlanta? I remember there being some really crazy traffic signs there.

I knew about the Left on Red from a one-way to a one-way. Did NOT know it was prohibited in NC.

F'k 'em though, there's a lot of common sense things that they don't seem to get here. (for instance, if you're going to repave the road, put the new sewer pipes in first, not tear up the road 3 months later to install the sewer pipes.)

A couple years ago I read they tried to pass a bill that would allow it from one-way to one-way turns. I don't think it passed, though.

I like being able to do that, except in most circumstances there is usually a sign explaining why you can't between the hours of 2am-11pm. Sort of like post 3

Yes, I knew that but in all honesty, I don't ever remembering being in a circumstance/intersection that ever really required me to turn left where it would've been allowed.

MN allows left turn on red only from 1 one way to another one way street unless there is an arrow present then it is on green/yellow only

In Japan, the right on red equivalent is left on red. No left on red allowed, unless there is a sign. There's about 10 of those in this country of 120 million. So no left.

And a right on red is suicide, until you wait for the light to turn red. There's a 5 second rule on a red, so try not to get a jump at a light, you'll get T-boned.

I thought this was perfectly legal in NC. I have only done it a couple times but now I know never to do it again.

Well perhaps they legalized it. Maybe you should pick up a driver's manual while I go scrub up my brain for posting this thread...

Yeah I specifically remember learning in drivers ED. Of course my teacher could have been a moron.

I am getting a new license this week so I will get a copy of the book.
