Learning a hobby

I love reading posts and trying to mod my car myself, but my knowledge can only go so far. I've tried to get jobs working at Autobody/Audio shops, but they want certified people (2 months of school in Boston = not possible as a Senior in HS who doesn't live in Boston). So does anyone have suggestions on what to do to learn more about car fabrication??

I really don't have time for the 2 months. They don't let you take a 2 month leave from high school. And I've booked up my entire summer already. Looks like I'll have to try for a porter job...
