Don't do it...Land Rovers are notorious for having reliability problems (BIG TIME). Two friends of mine just got Discovery Series II's. Within the first week of ownership, they were back to the dealer for electrical problems. And it's on-going. They're comfortable, stylish SUVs, and have A LOAD of character, but are NOT reliable at all.

If you're looking at a new Land Rover, wait for the LR3...supposedly, this vehicle will change what everyone has to say about LR reliability. Ford is doing to LR what they did to Jag--cleaning up their reliability mess.

That being said, I'd love to own a Land Rover (while under warranty)...it's something I'd put up with because of its amazing emotional appeal.

I want to track down the INTERIOR designers of the Freelander and kill them.

Are LR all 100% British-made ?

I think they're 100% British-assembled...the Ranger Rover has a lot of German blood...the Discovery Series II and Freelander are pure Brit.

So riddle me this, how did LR get such a good rep for being a rugged, drive it across it Sahara or through 10 feet of mud suv? Just because a friend or two had trouble dosent mean they ALL do.

More proof please, otherwise

The proof is out there. I'm just too lazy to look up the JD Power reliability chart for you.

Ford has nothing to do with it. Ford can only improve LR reputation. But since you wanted proof...see "Land Rover" at the VERY bottom of the chart.

I think you were just I thought it was just common knowledge that LR has a lack of reliability...

BTW--image is from J.D. Power & Associates website, from their press release this year.

Never even considered buying a LR so never looked it up or even cared about reliability of a LR. So go wipe your ass with "common knowledge".

Ford improves reputation. Oxymoron defined. Thanks...

Woa there...didn't mean to step on anyone's toes...

Ford really can only improve a British brand. Since Ford purchased Jaguar, they've steadily moved up the reliability scale. I think we'll see Land Rover move up the scale, too. All Land Rover can do is improve. Land Rover has admitted their problems since the buyout, and told the press that the new LR3 will be far more dependable. I believe them and wish them the best of luck. They're building great products, so it would be even better to see them make reliable ones, as well.

No toes steped on, but your owned comment was unappricated. Like I said, I could care less about LR's, but if a company is around for 56 years, they might be doing something right. I doubt the reliability issues have been this way for this amount of time.

You're right...they have been building amazing off-roaders for quite some time, and have a great heritage. But ever since they began building their more opulent vehicles with electronics, things have gone wrong. The Brits don't know how to do electronics...the Lucas Electronics fiasco of yore is a prime example, and how a lot of people remember British vehicles (not being able to drive in the rain because your electrical system would short).

Not to butt in or anything, but sensing the hostility, I just want to point out:

Then you shouldn't have called him out on that. The whole "owned" thing is pretty benign around here, BTW, I don't know why you took it so hard.

If you stop by the Lexus dealer, there are LRs and RRs like crazy on the lots. I remember being told this lady traded her Discovery for a RX 300 as her eletric seat would not stop moving.
She got to the Lexus dealer and sure enough, the seat was randomly moving up, down, lol

LR and RR are very rugged but everyone knows no one uses SUVs for these purposes here. The RR is magnificent, IMO. The DIscover and new Disco is simply a POS.

This was confirmed when Lexus held a 45 SUV having driving event. There was on and off-road routes. In talking with strangers, the LR was the worst SUV there.

People buy for NAME only.

I am attracted to the heritage & image thing, it is not so much now but where I live this used to be LR country for soccer moms. (now they do Lexus, Acura big time)

I would like to have seen that one.

I am not impressed with the Discovery one bit. They look cool, but are totally unsuitable for what they're actually used for in this country. 2 solid axles may be great for an African safari, but they won't help you on the way to soccer practice. I was in one a little while back and had the misfortunte of sitting in the back seat with two other guys - we were miserable as it was very tight back there (I am 5'11").

I think in a comparison of 45 SUVs though, the LR would walk all over most of them on off-road tracks, and feel less maneurverable and comfortable on-road. Of the two scenarios, I doubt most would-be Lexus owners can judge the former, so of course they wouldn't like it.
