Just Curious on Acura naming method

I was reading the "Acura Style" magazine which I have just received and I came to a page (pg. 64) where it shows all of the Acura models available in the States.
Just out of curiosity, Acura has most of the models ended with "X", such as MDX, NSX, RSX, and TSX. Why Acura does not name TL as TLX and RL as RLX?

I was actually thinking about this yesterday, does CL = Coupe Luxury? I was wondering why they didn't name the RL - SL for sedan luxury. Thanks for the info Ken.

CL is also used by Mercedes. No "shit storm" there.

Usually I think they make it stand for Xtreme (I know how corny that sounds). Most of the vehicle's names are very 'engrish' sounding.

Some of the other models' names do have meaning, such as NSX (new sportscar eXperimental) and MDX (multi dimensional crossover).

I just don't know what TSX, RSX and CL stand for.

I read from a Car and Driver's New Car Buyer's Guide that the naming conventions are thus:

RL = Road Luxury
TL = Touring Luxury
CL = Coupe Luxury

The names were adopted because when the cars are named with letters and numbers, people tend to find the manufacturer name more recognizable.

Apparently, Acura had conducted a study, and found a lot of people knew what a "Legend" was, but didn't know who made it.

And according to an article on www.honda.com about the history of the NSX, the original name was NS-X, where "NS" stood for "New Sportscar," and "X" stood for "Unknown," as in the unknown world.

Wrong. The monikers do not stand for that at all.

TL = Touring Luxury (that is the one you got right)
CL = Contemporary Luxury
RL = Refined Luxury
NSX = New Sports eXperiment
TSX = Touring Sports eXperiment

CSX = Oh, wait. I can't talk about that one just yet.

Don't blame me, blame Car and Driver. That's where I read it, afraid I don't have it laying around anymore. Everywhere else I read it says all of them stand for nothing.

As for the NSX - read the article for yourself:

I wasn't placing blame on you. Sorry if it came off that way. As for the NSX bit, the terminology I stated is the current term definition (it's even what they have listed in the terminology structure for the cars for a number of years). The original one was for the concept car.

CSX is a freight shipping company. I hope Acura won't be using that designation in the future.

They've trademarked it in Canada in January or February, I can't remember which...someone on TOV found the documents.

I think they will use it for the name of the new Acura EL.
