John Mendel: next RL in 18 months

Mendel told Jeff that the RL will be launched in the next 18 months...
I'm looking about the Infiniti M37 AWD... Better waiting for the RL and see what Acura can get from the new one...

If the new RL looks anything remotely like the current TL, the Acura should be just shot and put out to pasture as a brand.

With the current way they are designing cars, you can bet it will be worse

I'm afraid to see it. 18 months should be enough time to learn from their styling mistakes, but I'm not sure they actually recognize any mistakes at all....

And talk about a long model life cycle. Damn. The poor RL should be selling about 12 units/mo by the end of these 18 months, at the rate it's going now.

RL will be designed from Japan with Honda Legend in mind. I am more thinking of upscale TSX design with DI V6 hybrid producing 400bhp and lots of torque.

They will never learn. So sad what they did to the brand.
I've owned only two cars in 20 years and both of them are Acuras. No more.

Yeah designed in Japan and screwed up by the US design team with the small tidbits and grille.

I'd love to get excited and give them the benefit of the doubt but they've released one disaster after the next for the last few years. I just can't see this ending well.

Not only has their styling been terrible but there hasn't been one thing to get excited about on the technical side since since SH-AWD debuted in 2005.

Consider next year for Acura:

1) restyling TL
2) restyling TSX sedan
3) NEW MDX 2012
4) NEW RDX 2012

Can you believe that they will launch the RL too?
Maybe the new RL will get an EARLIER presentation at the end of 2010...?

who cares... if acura doesn't pull their head outta their ass (And recent trends dont show that thats happening) it will be a sales flop like the current RL... people have spoken and know what they want... Acura refuses to build it in some kinda wierd new business practice of NOT producing what people want. Though people are buying it, ALMOST NO one buys the new TL saying they love the front end, just that it grew on them, or they can make their peace with it... Which means they're banking on brand loyalty not attracting new/more market share... Lets see how much longer they plan on riding those coat tails...

The introduction of the ZDX with no coupe anywhere even remotely in the works is testament enough.

Think I dont know what I'm talking about and that Acura knows something I dont??? How many G37 Coupes does Infiniti sell vs. the FX series? How many 3-series coupes does BMW sell vs the X6? rest my case.

Don't be too upset. If they release any info on it, it'll probably change week to week anyway. They can't seem to make up their minds about anything.

Hopefully it looks like that bad-ass concept they were teasing us with a year ago, even with the grille it looked bad-ass!

Acura has some weird business case. They don't have a coupe or convertible unlike other luxury automakers.
All their claims make sense logically...but none are actually executed. I remember when the turbo was used in the RDX because of weight and fuel consumption...but then reality shows its neither much lighter or any efficient than a V6. They claim they are technologically advanced, which was true at some point when very few cars offered tech options like Navi, Bluetooth etc. But now even the damn Prius has radar cruise control, while it's only available on select Acura models...and ONLY if you choose the highest trim.
New technology today means 360 degree cameras, night vision displays, panoramic roofs, direct injection etc....something not in Acura's dictionary.

I really like the interior of the 4G TL, I really do. Everything on the inside seems so perfect. I would like one in my garage, but..... then you open the door and take a look on the outside. Yuck.

Now that a new V6 is confirmed to be in development, I am quite certain it will be placed in the next gen RL, and hopefully we see more than 6 forward gears. The J series isn't going to do it anymore...not in today's market.

50 bucks says it looks like somebodies nightmare. Also this thing better produce a little more power for how heavy it is. Perhaps 350-370hp. I don't care if they never make a V8 since CAFE standards are right around the corner.

*prays to the car gods that Acura does not fsck up the looks of the next RL, and that they really tone down the fugly nose a lot*

If it is good-looking and has a reasonable feature set, that may be my next car.

Oh, and they need to rename it "Legend" instead of this meaningless letter crap.

Bob, if you'll take the next RL/Legend on your CTS-V it has to be a VERY good car...

Well, I think Bob would keep the CTS-V then get a Legend if it were nice enough.

Here's the catalog for the current Legend:
http://www.honda.co.jp/LEGEND/pdf/LEGEND_type_200903.pdf

Now, the look of the Legend is better than that of the RL, but it starts at over $70K ta-tas for the top model. Yikes. No wonder only old farts drive these here. The bottom rung without leather is over $60K.

Yeap, it's not cheap... BUT consider that an Honda Legend in Europe costs about 59.000 euro vs a BMW5 that can costs with the SAME options about 75.000 euro and an Audi A6 the same...
An Acura TL 3.7 AWD costs about 70.000$ in Europe))))

At the rate honda changes their minds, pours tons into development and then goes a different route this car will probably have the same J series in it as well.
