Jack Stands

Which jack stands do you guys use?

Search amazon and there are a few brands that sell them, but I have no idea which one is famous.

And how much are they usually?? The ones from Amazon are like around $30-40.. Are they usually this cheap?

Thanks.

Mods, I don't know if this question belongs to Ramblings or Car Talk, please feel free to move it.

I have a 3-ton pair from Craftsman that came with the jack I bought, and I also picked up another pair of 3-ton jacks from Harbor Freight. The Harbor freight ones are almost 100% identical to the Craftsman except the support arm on the jack has a notch in the center of it (see picture in link).

The Harbor Freight ones go for $19.99 on their website, but my local store has them for less than online and in the back of almost every car magazine (Road and Track for ex), there usually is a 20% off coupon on a single item from HF. I was able to get mine for $12.xx.

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-h...nds-38846.html

My mechanic friend also purchased the HF jacks and we have both used the jacks on multiple projects with no trouble.

Never, ever get under a car with just a jack.... and especially when it's just the crappy scissor jacks. That's not safe.

Judging by the comment above, I'd guess no.

For our cars, get anything over 2 tons, and you should be fine! I have a pair from HF, and a pair of Craftsman from Sears.

Yeah, now I know. I will never get under there with a jack.

I highly recommend buying one to compliment your jack stands if you plan to be doing routine maintainance, mods under the car, etc.

Oh! I didnt know what hydraulic jack was! Just googled it.

Which one should I get it? I might as well just get them as a set. Is there any discount deal to get that hydraulic jack and a pair of jack stands?

Well a good thing to do when looking for a jack is to find one that suits the car or cars you will use it with most. Take into consideration: weight of the car, height of the car (low cars may need a low profile jack), distance of jack point from the closest entry point for the jack (pretty much to see if the jack is long enough to reach jack point) and maximum lift height. Take some measurements in relationship to the criteria above, go into HF or Sears and see which one best fits your needs.

BTW this is the set I purchased originally, it comes with a 3 ton jack, a pair of 3 ton jack stands and a creeper. I got it on sale for $89 or so a few years back. I purchased the HF 3 ton jack stands in order to be able to take the Acura completely off the ground.

http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_101...nics+Equipment

Now keep in mind, this jack barely fits under my "mildly" lowered Acura and a lot of my friends who have lowered cars need to drive on some wood in order to use my jack. I haven't ever jacked up a MS3, so I have no idea how much clearance there is for this floor jack, so you may need to look at a low profile jack, especially if you plan on lowering it.

HF sells good jacks too.

I recommend getting a low-profile one if you plan on lowering your car.

I'm planning to pair up Koni Yellows with some aftermarket springs, but the maximum I would go is 1 inch.

I'll just stop by HF and check out some of the jacks there!

As for jacks, try to find one with the larges lifting pad possible. Try to stay away from the cheap ones that have like a 1.5-2" lifting pad.

I agree. Try to find a jack with a large lifting area. Some lifting areas are also padded, but I actually prefer to use a non-padded type as they are usually notched and work better with suspension and and differentials.

I can't comment on HF jack stands as they are not available in Canada, but I would recommend that you look at any stand you are considering purchasing and inspect the quality of fabrication and welding. Most of this stuff is offshore manufactured nowadays, and I've seen some stuff that was just downright dangerous. Remember you're going to be underneath of whatever they are supporting.

I have about a dozen jack stands. The last set I purchased was a Michelin branded set. They were only a few dollars more than most of the others, but the quality of welds and materials used were noticeably better.
